It’s My Birthday!

June 3rd, 2007 pam Posted in despair, life, silliness 62 Comments »

To Whom it May Concern:

If you found a digital camera in the fabric section of the Courtland Center JoAnn store in Flint, Michigan, please let me know. Also, you might NOT want to look at the photos stored on the camera, as they include dozens of snapshots from the last several days on the road with my lover’s rock band.

Those photos might, for instance, feature myself and members of said rock band humping a giant stuffed Santa Claus on the dirty floor of a venue called “The Fortress of Solid Dudes.” Don’t ask.

I’d especially like to have my camera today, since it’s my 29th birthday, and I want to take pictures of the celebration tonight. And I have a finished Baby Surprise Jacket and another ’surprise’ finished craft project that I’d like to share with my online friends. (Yes, my online friends — who are kind enough to judge me by my crafty deeds, and not by any embarrassing photos they might find on my digital camera… including those that may involve toilets, Red Bull, and/or horse drawn carriages. Don’t ask.)

So, yeah. Please return the camera. It’s my birthday, after all.
xo, Pam

misc + meme

UPDATE: I’m clearly still getting the hang of the Haloscan — I just deleted 20 comments from this post. Oops!

Aw, you guys make me feel all better! Just to clarify, it’s not that I was going to go out and buy all that stuff tomorrow — just that I *could* have for the same $ my car sucked up. But I’m over it, and happy to have a working car, and so will speak of it no more. But be on the lookout for some de-stashing here in the very near future.

I’m switching to Haloscan for comments. I’m tired of getting awesome comments and not being able to properly respond to folks. (Case in point: CAROLYN! WHO ARE YOU, WHO WAS AT THE MORRISSEY SHOW ON TUESDAY AND LEFT THE CLEVER COMMENT ABOUT MOZZ-GIRLS??)

Finally, Ms. Bockstark tagged me for the newest version of the “weird things” meme. I in turn tag you all (or any of you who wants to take it up). Here are my weird things, some knitting-related, some not.

WEIRD THINGS ABOUT ME

(1) I was a flute performance major in college, but ended up getting a degree in feminist studies instead.

(2) I am a medical marvel. Well, not really, but a friend called me that once and it stuck. I’ve had cancer (leukemia) twice, and was expected to die a bunch of times. I didn’t, which is pretty cool.

My bones are kind of wonky from all the chemo, though, so I don’t get to run or jump or skip or wear high heels, except under water or on the moon (well, the latter is only in theory — I haven’t gotten to test it out yet).

(3) I don’t mind sewn cast-offs, seaming, kitchenering, grafting, etc. In fact, I kind of love them. Very satisfying.

(4) I dislike milk chocolate, no matter how fancy or fine. But I’ll still eat it if it’s sitting in front of me.

(5) I am a karaoke fiend.

(6) I use washable cotton menstrual pads instead of disposable ones. I just ordered some new ones from my friend and neighbor Kitty Litter Creations, who also makes fabulous vegan bags, pouches, and wallets. Tell her I sent you. :)

(7) I knit English style (taught by my British grandmother, after whom I’m named), and I am a gripper and a thrower.

(8) I like to make cheese.

some penises and a plea

May 2nd, 2007 pam Posted in life, marigold, socks No Comments »

Susie Bright (*love*) just posted a short but sweet interview with Jack Davis, about fiber arts and the penises he’s been crocheting for 25 years. Check it out.

Also, won’t someone invite me to Ravelry? Because, really, it looks so rad that I’m not above shameless begging.

Re: Marigold sock progress, here’s what my grading reward system got me this week (other than 80 graded essays on Times Square Red, Times Square Blue):

May: the month of socks and scarves and revolutionary puppets

May 1st, 2007 pam Posted in life, politics 101 Comments »

Happy May Day all!

In Minneapolis, they do this holiday up right, with thousands and thousands of people gathering for the annual May Day parade. In the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theater has been sponsoring the parade for more than 30 years now. It a pretty amazing space, with all the diverse lefties in this town working and playing together. (And because I’m a Flickr Freak these days, click image for details.)

If you’re in the Twin Cities, the parade is this Sunday, from 1pm to dusk at Powderhorn Park.

Knitting-wise, it looks like my May will be pretty wooly and wintery. I’ve finally caught that brutal sock bug that I’ve been hearing about for years, and I’ve also just ordered two custom skeins from Adam to make a chevron scarf. There’s lace to knit as well, but it just isn’t calling to me in the same way. Nope, for now it’s socks socks socks. And scarf.

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies - ‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’ “
