good mail day

April 11th, 2007 pam Posted in contests, swaps, yarn No Comments »

I woke up this morning to a stuffy nose, and this:

But was soon cheered by what might be the best mail day ever. (As always, click the pics for bigger versions on Flickr.)

First, the Koigu KPM I won in Ashley’s blogthday contest.

It’s the most gorgeous, most perfect rusty tomato red. I’m thinking either Nancy Bush’s Child’s First Sock, or maybe I’ll take a leap and try designing my own sock pattern to do it justice. Toe-up, of course, to make the most of every inch of this stuff.

Second, there was my first letter for Domesticat’s Knitterly Letter Swap. Alison, who lives in the UK, sent me a HUGE package by airmail standards:

Photos, postcards, a souvenir tea towel, and a lovely four page letter. Thanks so much Alison! Sitting down for a bit with your letter and a cup of tea was exactly what I needed this morning.

Well, that, and the new pair of spring shoes that also arrived on my doorstep today:

Steel grey, peep-toe, kitten-heel goodness — usually $110, but I got them for $20 HERE. I did just pledge to not buy new clothes for six months, but as I am not (and have no intention of becoming) a hobby cobbler, I figure shoes aren’t included in that vow.

THANKS everyone, for all your input on fabric! I’ll post photos as soon as the color I just ordered arrives in the mail…

Project! Spectrum! Limerick! Madness!

April 3rd, 2007 pam Posted in contests, silliness No Comments »

Scout is having an April/May Project Spectrum contest: you have 48 hours to either describe the preppiest outfit you ever wore (photos are a plus), or submit a pink-yellow-green-themed limerick. The prize? A hank of her hand-dyed PS-inspired sock yarn, called Prepster.

So far, my favorite limerick is Sarah R’s, and my favorite pictures are definitely Rachel’s.

Since I can’t resist a limerick challenge, I submitted a few myself… I’m disturbed by how many of them turned out to be love letters to Pretty in Pink. Read them, then get thee to the prepster contest — I know you’ve all got pictures that could win this thing.

——-

The Project demands we branch out
with color, and work past our our doubt.
So yellow and green
help make Prepster’s mien…
but PINK is still prettiest to Scout!

In the midwestern 80s punk scene,
there wasn’t a shortage of green.
But never with pink
(nor yellow, I think)
for the working class punk rocker teen.

ON MY VERDANT ADDICTION
Listen, I really am keen
on all the great colors I’ve seen.
Yellow and pink
are pretty, I think…
but I just can’t let go of the green!

A PROJECT SPECTRUM ODE TO “PRETTY IN PINK’s” PREPSTERS
At turning up collars, Blane’s deft.
And it’s pink linen blazers for Steff.
The bright ‘Hughes’ of spring
are a beautiful thing,
but they’re are also the colors of prep!

MORE “PRETTY IN PINK”: ODE TO ANDIE
The 80s near tore us apart
(with Reaganomics and wars, for a start).
But you put politics aside
when you stood up and cried,
“a prepster has stolen my heart!”

…AND TO MOLLY RINGWALD
You wore yellow and pink as a teen,
as you blew out those Candles Sixteen.
Sure, the Breakfast Club’s cool —
you’re the queen of high school!
But can’t we be Pretty in Green?
