yep. I’m an asshole.

ETA: MORE maths corrected, plus I added sizes XS and XXS. Check out the revised sizing. The re-worked file was created on June 10 at 2:50pm, and should say “Version 2.0″ at the top.

As soon as a zillion people started queuing my sweater pattern on Ravelry, I knew I was going to find a huge mistake. I just knew it.

And guess what!

I surely did!

Like, a really big one.

A really, really, massively big one.

Luckily, it’s not til after the raglan increases, so hopefully not many people have gotten that far yet. But, yeah, that part where it says to add 13 yarn-overs? That’s bunk. It’s supposed to be a number between 38 and 41, depending on your size. I have no idea where the number 13 came from. Let’s not even discuss it.

If you downloaded the pattern before June 9 at 12:30am Eastern US time, get the new one!

And please enjoy this recycled photo of my cat Wilma wearing yarn.

I mean, how can you be angry at someone who has such a precious kitty? Answer: you cannot.

Thanks in advance for your patience and generosity and not, you know, kicking my ass or sending hate mail.

the 1st Blogthday post

September 23rd, 2007 pam Posted in blogging, contests, wilma 176 Comments »

Hey! My blog turned one year old this month!
To celebrate, of course, there must be contest.
The prize?
A skein of Julia’s self-striping Vesper sock yarn, in the Meteor colorway.
You know you want it.

But, if you don’t, the winner can also choose to take home …
a skein of The Knittery’s merino/cashmere sock yarn, in Forest Moss.

How to win? Share your input on one of these four knitting and blog-related questions. I’ll draw the winner’s name randomly from all responses left before 11:59pm on Sunday, September 30.

(1) So, say you knit a sweater, doing a shit ton of math to make an XXXS size to fit the recipient, but then it was still too big, and instead of doing the thing properly, you just stitched the side seams up on your sewing machine and now it fits perfectly…

Except the recipient accidentally revealed last week that the side seams are (understandably) bulky and uncomfortable.

Is there anything to be done? Can I just use my sewing machine to do a dense satin stitch along the new side seam, then cut the excess knitted fabric off?

(2) Do you use lifelines in lace knitting? If so, how do you do it? If not, how often do you find yourself having to rip back your lace a row or two to hunt down where you’ve added or lost a stitch?

The Peacock Feathers Shawl (it’s now grown to about twice the size it is in this photo) is the most complicated lace I’ve ever done, and I’m learning that I really shouldn’t do it in front of the television.

(3)
What’s the best book/web site for learning intarsia knitting? My new project demands it:

Piers, by Martin Storey, from Rowan Vintage Style

(4)
So, say your fabulous grandmother died and left behind four tiny fluffy 10g balls of cream and rose 100% angora yarn that smell like her (a good thing, as your late grandmother was always impeccably turned out and prettily perfumed, albeit with a dab of paint or glue somewhere on her person), and you’ve been sitting on the yarn for 10 years.

What do you do with it? (Note: You have a mother and two sisters who might appreciate gifts made from it.)

Thanks in advance for your insights and input!

Oh, and a big thank you to Kris, who sent me a skein of the same Wollmeise yarn (modeled here by Wilma) she used for her So-Called Wonder Woman Scarf. Thanks Kris!!

Baby! Monkey! Kitty!

June 27th, 2007 pam Posted in baby, socks, swaps, wilma 43 Comments »

First of all, thanks for all the great comments on the last few posts. It’s been a crazy couple of weeks, work and life-wise, so I wasn’t able to respond to everybody. But thanks!

My sister had a giant 9-pound baby on June 22 — I’m an Auntie! Baby Claire is already wearing the 3-month-old sizes, so it’s apparently a good thing I was so negligent with the gift-knitting. She may even have outgrown the Baby Surprise by the time Fall weather arrives.

Ooh, and check out the first of two Monkeys for my Sockapalooza pal.

My pal requested both “crazy colors” and “lacy patterns.” Thanks to everyone who weighed in with pattern suggestions for this lovely yarn — when Cookie herself suggested Monkey, who was I to disagree?

That bit of pooling on the sole was the only thing that made this yarn anything less than heavenly to work with. Do you think my pal will mind it? Would you?

(And, speaking of socks, have you seen Domesticat’s Drunken Bee socks? I love them. So much.)

But Monkey is about the only knitting I’ve gotten done with all the business and craziness and travel and whatnot. Usually, Wilma the Cat, Queen of Placidity, keeps us sane and calm.

But lately, even she’s been kind of spastic.

eye candy underpants (+ kitten)

February 9th, 2007 pam Posted in wilma No Comments »

Discovered this photo of myself online… It’s from this past summer, at a cheezy goth party in San Francisco, where hundreds of lovely, kind people were drinking and dancing in [somewhat] earnest celebration of The Date of the Beast (06/06/06).

Um, awesome.

Anyway, some magnificent dude named Gooby brought a (satanic?) pinata, and the whole club watched as he got onstage and tore it apart with this teeth.

Um, awesome. But my friend Melanie and I were less interested in the ritual than we were in the free candy. We immediately rushed the stage to shamelessly scavenge for treats. I am on the right, in the red dress. The problem, as you can see, is that the camera flash went straight to my underpants, which I swear were not visible under normal lighting conditions.

Um, kind of awesome? I’m undecided on this one. But my underpants are eye candy for sure.

For the fainter of heart (i.e. those not interested in partial nudity or jokes about devil worship — if you even made it this far), here is my favorite Eye Candy Kitty, Wilma.

Living in Minneapolis, far from lover and kitty, photos from home are especially precious — and come on, this kitty is precious any time. This picture was taken after she’d gotten a fancy haircut. She looks like a 5-pound lion. Many knitting-related pics to come, after I’ve unpacked the camera. Happy weekend!
