february lady sweater
**UPDATE! A LIST OF COMMON MODIFICATIONS TO THE FEBRUARY LADY SWEATER PATTERN IS NOW AVAILABLE HERE.**
As soon as I finished knitting Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Baby Sweater on Two Needles (more commonly known as the “February Baby Sweater”) for my niece, I thought, “I need that sweater.” Not for any other babies I know (and I seem to know an awful lot these days), but for me me me.(If you don’t already own Zimmermann’s Knitter’s Almanac, you should. It’s the best $7 you will ever spend on a knitting book. For reals.)
Jenny was steps ahead of me, and had already made her own “giant” version, in baby pink. But I wondered if there was a way to make it more fitted on top, so the whole thing had a kind of 50s a-line shape to it. Enter the top-down raglan cardigan—the easiest sweater structure known to knitterkind.
I started with basic raglan shaping for the collar and yoke, then stuck in a row of eyelet increases just above the bust to add fullness all the way around. (I may still make an icord with pom-poms on the ends, and thread it through the eyelets, like so.)

And ended up with my new favorite sweater.

yarn: Sundara Worsted Merino in Green Over Ochre
needles: 5mm circular
buttons: 7/8″ wooden

Want to make your own? Sweet! I wrote up a free pattern.
YARN: approximately 750 (850, 950, 1050, 1150) yards of worsted weight yarn. This lace pattern is especially lovely in semi-solid yarns—I used Sundara Worsted Merino in “Green Over Ochre.”
NEEDLES:
• US 8 (5mm) 32” circular needle, or size needed to get gauge
• US 8 (5mm) double-pointed needles, or size needed to get gauge
GAUGE: 18 stitches / 4” in garter stitch
FINISHED BUST SIZE: 35 (37.5, 41, 41, 44, 49.5, 52.5) inches (bust is the same for S and M, but sleeves are 1.75” larger on size M)
A note on sizing: You can easily make this cardigan smaller or larger by casting on fewer or more stitches at the beginning, and/or doing fewer or more raglan increases—just be sure that your final stitch counts for the sleeves and body are a multiple of 7 so that the stitch pattern works.
My raglan math (such as it is) owes a great debt to Barbara Walker’s Knitting From the Top, and to Laura’s fabulous (and free!) “Easy and Top Down” pattern.
All mistakes are, of course, my own—bring them to my attention at flintknits@gmail.com.

I can’t believe it. After I struggled to make a toddler version of this for my granddaughter, her mother looked at it longingly & said she’d love one for herself. So I labored & labored, being a pretty math-challenged person, and finally did it. It was great, but, oh, those weeks & weeks of calculating & fear that I’d gotten it wrong! And now, HERE is wehat I needed in the first place! Wow. Applause.

[…] Finally, in Portland, our last stop, I visited Central Yarn Shop by chance, since it was on our way to lunch. This store had lots of basic yarns, in both wool and blends, as well as some novelties. There was also a nice selection of buttons and other notions in the back. I was going to buy a few buttons for some upcoming baby sweaters, since we’d chatted with the owner for awhile (and I have some sort of purchase obligation after talking), but then I spotted a random pinkish tweedy yarn without a label. There were 5 skeins, and the owner said it was a lambswool/cashmere blend. This stuff is incredibly soft, and the tweed is beautiful. (No, I haven’t taken photos yet.) I hope to have enough for the February Lady Sweater. […]

Has anyone tried it in a cotton or cotton/wool blend?

Oh oh oh. I think after many hours searching, 1 complete knit that’s been unravelled and 1 only-got-halfway-through-the-back, you’ve finally provided me with the right pattern for my bag full of tweedy wool. I’m going to knit up a swatch today. If it doesn’t work I’m going to break my wardrobe refashion pledge in advance (it hasn’t officially started yet) and buy some wool for this. Lovely.

I have been searching the web up and down for the pattern to a top down cardigan that I made back in the mid- to late 70s. The yoke and sleeve caps are in a leaf pattern and the body and sleeves are done in stockinette.
I’ve scavenged eBay so many times that my eyes are tired. *chuckle*
Do you know if the leaf yoke is pretty much a basic pattern?
Btw, I was linked to your site by the Ewe to You Yarn Store newsletter (Grand Blanc). I live in the area and appreciate the indie shops, as well. You can’t always find what you’re looking for in the chain stores.
Thank you for your time and consideration, Pam.

I’m almost to the point of starting the lace pattern, and am loving it! This will be a replacement for a much-loved but disintegrating vintage sweater in a wonderful 60’s slime green. I’m using a very nice Malabrigo (Rios/Lettuce) merino for the piece, which is lovely in the hand and pleasantly variegated. Love the swingy shape and clean detailing! It’ll be so nice to not have to deal with the bulk of assembled pieces. Now, to find the right buttons!
