yep. I’m an asshole.
ETA: MORE maths corrected, plus I added sizes XS and XXS. Check out the revised sizing. The re-worked file was created on June 10 at 2:50pm, and should say “Version 2.0″ at the top.
As soon as a zillion people started queuing my sweater pattern on Ravelry, I knew I was going to find a huge mistake. I just knew it.
And guess what!
I surely did!
Like, a really big one.
A really, really, massively big one.
Luckily, it’s not til after the raglan increases, so hopefully not many people have gotten that far yet. But, yeah, that part where it says to add 13 yarn-overs? That’s bunk. It’s supposed to be a number between 38 and 41, depending on your size. I have no idea where the number 13 came from. Let’s not even discuss it.
If you downloaded the pattern before June 9 at 12:30am Eastern US time, get the new one!
And please enjoy this recycled photo of my cat Wilma wearing yarn.

I mean, how can you be angry at someone who has such a precious kitty? Answer: you cannot.
Thanks in advance for your patience and generosity and not, you know, kicking my ass or sending hate mail.

Cute cat!
June 9th, 2008 at 1:06 am

June 9th, 2008 at 4:15 am
Seriously? People would send you hatemail for that teensy, weensy mistake, after you made up the world’s most fabulous sweater pattern? For shame. Big massive thank yous, the lady-sweater rocks v.v.hard.

Thanks for the update — I just ordered yarn for it and can’t wait to start it!!
June 9th, 2008 at 4:59 am
Hmmm, the only way I can possibly forgive you for this is if you send me the kitty
Just kidding, I hadn’t started it yet, but it’s shot up the queue - it is gorgeous!
June 9th, 2008 at 5:42 am
Thanks for such an awesome pattern, and oh yeah your cat freaking rocks.
June 9th, 2008 at 6:06 am
I still think you are awesome because you generously shared a kick-ass, cute, and totally wearable pattern with all of us.
June 9th, 2008 at 6:29 am
Clearly, to make this up to us, you should send us all the yarn for your geeegorgous pattern. I will email my address ASAP.
PS: I will also accept your cuteness in a bottle, but only in a pinch.
June 9th, 2008 at 6:40 am
*anyone* who complains should say the title of your post outloud, to themselves, while looking in a mirror, and reconsider what they’re about to say. This is a F-A-B pattern, and thanks for sharing it!
June 9th, 2008 at 7:14 am
You are NOT an asshole! That said I was doing the math over and over last night trying to get 7 to divide things and it just wasn’t working. Thanks for the fix. No ripping in my case.
Thank you for the amazingly cute pattern.
June 9th, 2008 at 7:34 am
You give us a free pattern then apologize for the mistake? No need to, thank you for doing it!
June 9th, 2008 at 8:05 am
Oh man - that is so not asshole territory. Although Wilma looks less than pleased. Prolly just the yarn wearing, yes?
No worries!
June 9th, 2008 at 8:14 am
yep, asshole… that is what I was thinking. That is what I would call the person who just wrote out the best sweater pattern I’ve seen in awhile - for free. Hello?! If anyone sends hate mail, sic the cat on em. Love that picture.
June 9th, 2008 at 8:24 am
people are jerks if they get pissed. they pay for patterns with errors, they should be nicer to free patterns with errors. or something? anyways, love wilma.
June 9th, 2008 at 8:36 am
The best part of the knitting community is the tremendous generosity of spirit by the vast majority of the community -we all just want to help one another. I’m sure everyone understands and don’t give it another thought.
June 9th, 2008 at 8:48 am
I just downloaded the revised sweater. I’ve loved making this for little ones, and your version sounds perfect.
That cat is the funniest thing going!
June 9th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Don’t worry about it - you are still awesome! I am eagerly knitting the raglan decreases and can’t wait to get to the lacy bit. I’m so excited by this pattern, I had to start it immediately with something from the stash. I will surely be making another even if I can’t get ahold of some Sundara! Oh, and I made my first fancy buttonhole, which is amazing! Thank you!
June 9th, 2008 at 10:34 am
How could you?? I mean, I’ve never, NEVER made a mistake on one of my patterns, and certainly not one where I was adding by ten, which seems like it would eliminate any possibility of mistake, and - HEY! Look over there! Something distracting!
Seriously, no big whoop!
June 9th, 2008 at 11:25 am
I’m delurking to say: No, you’re not an a**. You’re a generous knitter who shared a lovely pattern–for free! Thank you!
June 9th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Everyone makes mistakes. Even the big, bad knitting magazines and books have mistakes. Take it easy, sister, and thanks for the pattern!
June 9th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
I was shamed by a tech editor a while back for a stupid math mistake… And I’d been loudly bragging that I’m really really good at math. *sigh*
We’re just human, right?
June 9th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Thank you SO much for this gorgeous pattern. I love it! Off to search for the perfect yarn…
June 9th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
Thank you SO much for this gorgeous pattern. I love it! Off to search for the perfect yarn…
June 9th, 2008 at 2:32 pm
Awesome free pattern - which I’ve been hoping for (I saw some adult February sweaters a few months ago but haven’t had the brain power to tackle the up-sizing…), a fixed error plus apologies…I think, no problem! (and o.k., I didn’t get the yarn until this afternoon!)
Thanks very much for sharing your pattern with all of us internet lurkers!
June 9th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Thanks! I’ve had yarn in the stash for a long time that just needed a pattern. I think this will fit the bill.
June 9th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
You’re giving us a gorgeous, publication-worthy pattern for free. You are so not an asshole.
June 9th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Asshole.
June 10th, 2008 at 6:14 am
whoever sent you hatemail just for a knitting mistake needs to learn that a free pattern, done on your own time, without the benefits of several editors, comes with its own share of problems. Hell, even published patterns come with their share of patterns.
You, on the other hand, are being incredibly generous, considerate, and talented.
And i think you should see this
June 10th, 2008 at 8:15 am
kitteh nedz noz!
June 10th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Thanks for the pattern, I got the update. It seems a little advanced, can a relatively new knitter do this without any problems?
I love it thanks again.
June 10th, 2008 at 11:14 am
hmmm hate mail for a wonderful free pattern with one error? yeah that would be an overreaction.
let me know if you get any. i will kick their ass for you.
June 10th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
Hmmm…
Beautiful pattern + free + honest mistake openly corrected + working out math for larger sizes ≠ asshole
And I checked my math on that one twice.
May any complainers find their yarn tangles unmanageably until they admit the error of their ways.
June 10th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Sorry…should have been “working out math for smaller sizes.” So I lied about checking twice. The equation still works, even if I look like an idiot.
June 10th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
There are advantages to being slow in following a trend. The sweater is lovely, and thanks for being so conscientious about correcting errors. I am not a big raglan fan, but I think this may be one I have to have.
Wilma is adorable, although I think she wants to know why one with such perfect black fur should have to wear wool for a photo shoot.
June 11th, 2008 at 11:21 am
i’m an asshole, too. i tagged you.
June 11th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Hey, at least you found the mistake. It’s all good.
OMG, Wilma has priceless funny kitty appeal.
June 12th, 2008 at 7:31 am
I tried to download V. 2.0 but Adobe said that there is a file error in it and won’t complete. Can you check on that please?
June 13th, 2008 at 12:12 am
You ROCK!
Seriously cute kitty too
June 14th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Thank you for the beautiful pattern! Can’t wait. Happy to test knit
Seriously, many thanks.
June 16th, 2008 at 2:45 am
Hi,
a big hug for the pattern and for the correction of the mistake,
I do not know a lot of pattern writers who would spread the news so instantly. I have cast on yesterday and am really kind of addicted. Even if my gauge is diffrent it does not harm the
outcome of this lovely traditional. You rock for making it available for us big girls!!
You can find me on ravelry,
Christiane aka qusic
June 16th, 2008 at 8:36 am
Gee, thanks Pam, now I have Denis Leary stuck in my head singing “I’m an Asshole.”
I love Wilma because she always looks slightly pissed in her pictures.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:25 am
I am not getting up dates in my bloglines, and knew you had to have posted since this sweater is in everyone queue on ravelry. So yeah, you rock. I (like everyone else, I am sure) love this sweater and can not wait to make one for myself. You are a rock star (um, yeah, literally).
June 17th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Let me get this straight….
If Ravelry tells us anything, there are hundreds of us who have been longing to make the February Baby Sweater in a big people size. 99% of those hundreds of us have either been too lazy or too math-phobic to work it out for ourselves. (personally, if I knew how much math was involved in knitting, I’d have passed.)
You crunched the numbers, perhaps were off by a few, re-crunched the numbers and provided us with a pattern. And you’ve done it all for free.
And you’re worried we’re mad? Oy, girl.
I’d like to propose we take up a collection. Everyone contributes the $6.50 we would have gladly paid for the pattern and send you to, say, Bermuda for a week. Or maybe Paris.
You’re a doll. And Wilma is awesome.
June 18th, 2008 at 5:36 am
You are no asshole, you are genius for making the pattern and so generous for making it a FREE download! I love it and hope to cast on for one soon.
Super cute photo!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:43 am
Just wanted to say, ‘Hi it’s nice to meet you’. A friend wrote and said she loved your “altitude”. I’m sure she meant your attitude, but ya know, all things considered…. :o)
Your Lady Feb. has been mentioned as a candidate for a KAL in the, oh hell I don’t remember the name of the group…it’s a group on Rav for vests and cardigans, hold on I’ll go look.
Sleeves Off and Buttons on.
Great job on the adaptation of the sweater btw.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
Yeah, you’re totally an arsehole, cos you really did that on purpose didn’t you?
June 28th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Thank you for making a cardigan to fit Grown ass women! I love it!
July 4th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
Wow, Wilma is so pretty that she doesn’t even look real. I thank you for the pattern- I sense a long series of top down sweaters with lace patterns coming on.
