So, apparently, babies do not just go away …
… they become children.
And all that baby knitting I did last year, for all those friends’ babies? Outgrown long ago, as those babies become kiddos. And while those kiddos won’t all be getting handknit gifts on a regular basis, I’ve happily discovered that knitting for my toddler niece is a lot like knitting for an adult. BUT FASTER.
pattern: Milan Jacket, by Louisa Harding, from Natural Knits for Babies and Moms
yarn: Lion Brand Cotton Ease, with Patons Grace for trim
needles: 4.5mm vintage
[raveled]

Once I put the red buttons on, they seemed to come screaming out of nowhere.
So I added the red trim to match –just a single crochet stitch around all the edges.
Thanks for all the links to great patterns! I’ll close comments on that post on Thursday, and pick a random winner.
I’m sorry I haven’t responded to all your contest entries and comments. I spent the weekend recording new songs with this band I’m in, and was rewarded with a wretched cold. The only good part of being this sick is that I have less guilt about shirking all that work I should be doing, and wasting the day on the sofa knitting and watching MSNBC election coverage in hopes that Rachel Maddow will appear and save us all from the Crazy (which she does just often enough to keep me watching).
Before you go, you should check out some of my current favorite things:
- Denyse Schmidt’s Obama quilt fundraiser [via doggedknits]
- the new shop from 100% Philistine-Made — I just bought a bitchin pincushion
- my new camera strap from Split Yarn

That’s beautiful - so chic! The red accent to go with the buttons is perfect. My great nephew has moved into toddler hood - it opens up more “little man” type pattern possibilities. So fun.
And what - no swearing? I’m so disappointed

Adorable!
Everyone’s sick with the weather changing. Rest up and get well soon!

I’m a little scared that maybe you got that cold from me. Um, whoops?
And dood. The red trim is PERFECT on that lil’ chicken’s sweater.

What a fantastic sweater, and I love the contrast red with it. Perhaps I need to knit one up too now that I have seen how wonderful yours is.

That is an elegant little sweater. I really like the way the ribbing looks on the sleeves. Very nice.
October 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Oooh, I love it! That red trim is just great with the grey.
October 21st, 2008 at 7:50 pm
I heart Rachel Maddow! I’m watching her right now and catching up on my blogs during the commercials!
October 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Oh yes, Rachel Maddow all the way. But I have a soft spot for Olbermann’s brand o’crazy…
October 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Oh hey–when did you make that? It’s totally cute. And if I ever see Rachel Maddow in person I am totally going to make out with her.
October 21st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
That sweater is absofrickingly amazingly beautiful. May have to knit one up adult size for ME! Can I add that to my other comment about what patterns I want to knit?!?
October 21st, 2008 at 9:25 pm
That sweater is perfection. The little red buttons are fab!
P.S. Rachel Maddow rocks big time.
October 21st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
That is a cool sweater! I hope you’re feeling better and enjoying The Rachel Maddow Show. I have the biggest girl crush on her.

Beautiful! Love the colour combo. I just tried a contrast edging for a kid project myself, and am amazed at how it just lifts the whole project to a new level.
October 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Aw, that’s adorable. I need to get up the nerve to make actual garments; maybe kid’s stuff is the place to start.
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:58 am
I LOVE the little red accents on the grey background of the sweater! Tres chic. And wow, that camera strap is awesome. Hope your cold gets better soon!

FYI regarding baby to little person knits: My Tomten (at 5 sts/inch I think) fit my little Maggie two years ago when she was less than 1 year old. Then it fits last year when she was one. Now it still fits this year…but she’s an actual person and is requesting pockets. Did I seriously just say FYI?
I love gray and red.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:28 am
Oh my god, look at that color combination. I’m so going to copy it.
(I love knitting for toddlers for that reason–the satisfaction of a sweater, in less than half the time!)
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:47 am
The red piping is so chic and perfect!
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:55 am
That red trim is a great touch. I’ll have to remember that color combination for future reference.
Also, I think that’s the cutest baby sweater I’ve ever seen. Considering I don’t like baby knits, the fact that I think it’s cute is WEIRD. Thanks for the links!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:22 am
Oh, the cute of the sweater! It burns! It burns!
Thanks for the link to Caro’s shop - I didn’t realize she had point’n’shoot camera straps!
October 22nd, 2008 at 8:40 am
Ooh, the red details make the sweater, but without being too cutesy! Bravo
October 22nd, 2008 at 11:26 am
lovely! those buttons are perfect and the contrasting edging is a great touch…
October 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
The red trim and buttons are the hotness. You are the cool aunt that every kid wishes they had growing up, except you are real.
October 23rd, 2008 at 3:38 am
That is a lovely sweater, the contrast trim is fab.
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:41 am
Very nice cardigan! And the red trims really makes a difference.
Good Work.
October 23rd, 2008 at 6:25 am
Hee hee - did you hear about the February Lady Sweater Drinking Game at Rhinebeck?
October 23rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
I love how you finished this little cardigan. So simple and effective, what’s not to love?
October 23rd, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Beyond perfect! I want a sweater like that for myself. I love seed stitch rib. I’ve been thinking of trying to design a sweater for myself with some merino/tencel yarn, and I think I may have to knit a swatch of that lovely ribbing.
Your niece will be very stylish. Her mom might want one too.
October 29th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
i love these two colors together. what an adorable sweater.
October 29th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
That is one stylish sweater! I love the red buttons, and you did just the right thing by adding a touch of red trim. It’s perfect.
