supersad news generates supercute pattern: Willie!
ETA: Shepherd Susie of Juniper Moon Farm has started an incredibly generous contest. If you buy the Willie pattern and comment on her blog, you’ll be entered to win a 2011 share in the farm’s yarn CSA.
Remember Crush? Also known as The Crushinator? My badass puppy and the muse who inspired the wurstwärmer pattern?
Well, on Thursday night, Crush’s favorite puppy sitter took her to the store and had her chillin in a shopping cart when, like a puppy, she jumped out.
And broke her leg.
Badly.

Today, Crush had some pretty complicated surgery to stabilize a pretty complicated fracture (it went through the growth plate, which on a 9 month old puppy, is still all squishy and vulnerable). Did I say the surgery was complicated? I meant to say it was EXPENSIVE.
And so while Crusher was grogged out on morphine waiting for her moment on the operating table, I spent the weekend working like a dog to whip up a wiener-themed pattern to put a drop in the Puppy Surgery Fund bucket.
I give you … Willie!

Willie is a round-yoked cardigan for babies and kids, with a lovable wiener dog that wraps around the lower body. The body and sleeves are knit separately, then joined in one piece for the yoke. If you don’t love dogs, Willie also looks fetching in stripes and solids. Worked up quickly in chunky yarn, this cardigan makes a handy last-minute gift, and a fun introduction to intarsia knitting.

SIZES:
Chest circumference 20 (21.5, 23, 24, 26, 28) inches, to fit ages 6m (12m, 18m, 2y, 4y, 6y)
MATERIALS:
- YARN: Louet Riverstone Chunky (100% wool, 165 yds) or other chunky weight yarn 1 (2, 2, 2, 3, 3) skeins main color (MC); 1 skein contrast color (CC); 1 skein Willie color (WC)
- US 9 (5.5mm) circular & double-pointed needles, or size to get gauge
- 6 (6, 6, 6, 7, 7) buttons, 1/2 inch in diameter
- 2 stitch markers
- scrap yarn for holding stitches and embroidering dog collar
- tapestry needle
The pattern includes instructions and charts for sizes from 6 months to 6 years. If you haven’t tried intarsia knitting before (that’s the kind of colorwork where you have large chunks of color — like argyle! or a wiener dog!), this is a great first intarsia project. KnittingHelp.com has an excellent video explaining the technique.

As a fellow weiner dog owner and a mom-to-be, this post both breaks my heart and delights me. Lots of love to poor Crush and thanks so much for this fantastic pattern!
April 26th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
Ohhhhh, Crush! Hope her leg heals just perfectly.
And I’ll take some of that Willie action - not usually a fan of intarsia, but I’ll make an exception for this! So cute.
April 26th, 2010 at 5:19 pm
Poor crush! I hope she feels better soon. That sweater is so adorable though and I just so happen to have a baby (Niece) coming into my life next month that I get to knit cute thinks for!
April 26th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Poor puppy, I hope she heals up well.
April 26th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Oh Crush, silly girl, why did you do that? OMG, she is so pathetic and adorable all at the same time with her tiny doggie cast. I hope she recuperates quickly!
April 26th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
So sorry to hear about Crush! Get well soon!!
But I must say, I love this cardi!! Will be making 1 for my niece!
April 26th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
I hope Crush heals quickly!!! And Willie is swoonalicious.
April 26th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
dunno when I’ll knit it, but I know several dog-loving families with babies. and I’m happy to help with the crush surgery fund. Poor pup!
April 26th, 2010 at 6:09 pm
Count me in on the Crush surgery fund. Wish I had your talent, ’cause I could have used a vet fund myself a few months back! My granddaughter will look smashing (crushing??) in this sweater. Hope all goes well with your pup’s recovery.
April 26th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Someday I’ll learn how to knit (I know, don’t tell your friends). But I’m sending you $6 of Colorado love anyhow.
April 26th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
Poor Crush. Surgery is no fun for anyone, but especially when that anyone doesn’t understand what’s happening. And just wants to run and jump like a pup.
My son had a romper with a dachsund applique that said “longest dog” below…this was his cutest baby garment.
This sweater will trump that romper for any future children.
April 26th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Poor Crush! I fully understand the expensive surgeries, as my big Akbash Truman has run us close to $10k in vet bills. (No, I’m not kidding. I’ve kept track and added it up.) It is with solidarity in dog love that I buy your super cute pattern to help pay for Crush’s expenses. I hope he feels better soon!
April 26th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
Ahhh, your pup and my son must be on similar schedules…B just got a cast on today (minus Crush’s complicated surgery)…21 mos and not real happy w/ it…he points to the cast and says “It (s)tuck.”
Good luck w/ your baby.

Poor baby! Get well soon Crush. I grabbed this pattern and the wurstwärmer. Thanks so much for the wonderful looking projects.
April 26th, 2010 at 11:31 pm
Oh poor Crush. I hope she mends well and is on the go very soon.
Poor you too. 9 weeks ago, I came home to find my doxy, Tank LaRue, unable to move. She had a herniated disc in her cervical spine and had spinal surgery that day, so I understand about the worry and heartache of seeing your love bug in pain and the financial woe as well. Oh the woe. When we owed money on our taxes this year, I wondered if they would accept a slightly wobbly, but expensive Dachshund as payment.
Your sweater pattern is adorable and I admire your creative energy and focus at such a worrisome time. My twin god babies are going to look awfully cute this fall in their doxy cardies.
Sending lots of love for a speedy recovery.
April 27th, 2010 at 12:53 am
I was worried when I saw that first sentence in my RSS. Poor Crush, but I’m relieved that it’s not worse. I’m a dachshund fan so I’ll just have to help with the bills by purchasing that adorable pattern!
April 27th, 2010 at 3:56 am
Poor Crush, she looks so forlorn lying there. I hope her leg heals up soon.
April 27th, 2010 at 4:56 am
Poor Crush! I’m glad he’s going to be okay.
This is an adorable pattern. It’s beyond my skill at the moment but as a dachshund mom I must have it.
April 27th, 2010 at 5:42 am
Poor Crush! I’m glad that the surgery will be successful, but OUCH on the vet bills (been there, know that … our Goof had two major abdominal surgeries in ten months. Now he has health insurance). I have lots of little folk in my life, I’m happy to buy the pattern to help out with the Fund.
April 27th, 2010 at 6:19 am
Poor baby! Crush looks so sad in that picture. Like she’s thinking, “Now how am I going to jump around with this damn thing on my leg?!” Glad she’ll be OK. Count me in with the surgery fund.
April 27th, 2010 at 7:49 am
Poor little thing!! Crush looks just so, so sad. what a great little sweater, though.
April 27th, 2010 at 8:44 am
Poor little guy. I own one of those pigheaded little buggers myself (or maybe it’s the other way around?). Just bought a pattern. Let the healing begin!
April 27th, 2010 at 9:15 am
Kisses to Crush’s ouchie! Just purchased the pattern - going to make it for a friend’s bun-in-the-oven (due in June, will be 6m when the weather gets cool enough for a sweater. Perfect!)
More kisses!
April 27th, 2010 at 10:23 am
ah poor little crushinator : (
i hope he recovers quickly.
April 27th, 2010 at 10:41 am
Oh, Crush - you poor kid! Our furry family sends big, sloppy, healing doggie kisses your way! And, wouldn’t you know it? One of the vet techs is expecting a baby girl in a few months. What a perfect pattern for her wee baby girl - and a good way to support darling Crush. Feel better soon!
April 27th, 2010 at 11:10 am
So terribly sad for Crush! I hope your fundraiser is crazy successful. I just got the pattern and want to knit 10 of them. Take care and keep us posted.
xoxox, WonderMike
April 27th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Hang in there and good luck.
April 27th, 2010 at 11:57 am
Oh, poor Crushie, I hope the surgery works out well.
But that pattern!!! soooo cute. I have so many upcoming babies to knit for and have been looking for a cute non-lace sweater pattern as a go to choice for gender-neutral gifts. Off to buy this asap!
Get well soon Crush.
April 27th, 2010 at 11:59 am
Poor baby. I hope Crush feels better soon. His cast reminds me of the one my first toy poodle had when she was a puppy and got stepped on (accidentally, while chasing a ball) by her huge bull dog cousin-buddy.
BTW, I found that knitting a little sock–well, okay, several socks, color coordinated with sweaters–for the encasted leg really helped preserve the cast. She learned to walk with all that on her tiny leg amazing well and was like greased lightening when the cast came off.
Please let us know if there’s more we can do to help you and Crush!
April 27th, 2010 at 12:17 pm
Warm hugs to you and to little Crush! I’m fresh from the hospital myself and this will make wonderful recovery knitting.
Please update us on his progress!
April 27th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
So sorry to hear about Crush! Feel better! Now I know what patter to use for the next baby sweater!
April 27th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Best wishes for a fast recovery to little Crush. I had a cat go through something similar a long time ago. He recovered and I’m betting that Crush will, too.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Healing vibes to crush! Luckily i have never had anything like this happen wish a 4 legged family member, cannot even imagine the cost of the vet! ( i mean when my dog had a stroke it was near 200 just to have her put out of her pain, and i didn’t get to keep her ashes!)
An adorable sweater! I have no one to knit it for right now but have been knitting baby items here and there and putting them away for a someday grandchild (so not rushing it, lol, maybe ten years down the road! Lets get her through college first!) but it is adorable and i want to be able to do something small to help.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Poor Baby. Thank you for the pattern. I bought it and plan on knitting it for my grandson who loves doggies.
April 27th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
oh no!!! Mine just had back surgery so I feel your pain. Hope pup is better soon.
April 27th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Aw, Crush, you’re not supposed to take your name literally, sweetie! As a dachshund-lover, naturally I’m buying a copy of the pattern, but honestly, I’m doing it for you, sweetie. Dachshunds need their little legs even more than those other, long-legged dogs. How can you take enough steps to keep up to your people if one of them is broken? Get well SOON!

Hey Crush, hope you feel very soon much better. I had a bad leg some years ago too and had to wear such a totally stupid looking tin cup around my had. Not very cool, I´m a Jack Russel Terrier and I couldn`t jump with that thing on.
So, I will keep an eye on this blog, how you`re doing. See you Rudi

April 29th, 2010 at 1:35 am
Poor Crush!!! It is heartbreaking to see those sad eyes of the little patient and not be able to do anything to make her feel better. I felt really helpless when my dachshund was recovering from her surgery a year ago: she was really helpless and woeful, and all I could do was keep her really close to me and whisper kind words in her ears. Hope Crushinator is feeling better by now. I’ll keep my thumbs up for that she will be up and running soon and there will be no permanent damage in the leg.
Willie pattern really is supercute! I’m going to knit it for my little nephew; that way he can wrap a wiener dog around him when ever he wants, even though he lives 2 hour drive away from her favorite doxie (i.e. our Hertta). Thanks again for a great wiener-related pattern!
April 29th, 2010 at 8:10 am
Good luck to both of you. I love the yoke on this! And with a grand niece and even newer grand nephew it will be perfect.
PS
Your February Lady is the first sweater I’ve been able to knit AND wear in public.

Hi:
I am so sorry about Crush! I didn’t know this when I bought the pattern but will think about him while I knit. I too have a wiener dog, named Willie who will be 17 in June! I am knitting this sweater for my little girl who is 2 and loves all things puppy!
{{{Hugs}}}

Love to Crush (and you)! Will be sending healing thoughts while I knit Willie for a friend’s grandbaby - my friend is the devoted mother of a little dachsund - I can imagine how happy she will be with Willie! thank you!
May 2nd, 2010 at 10:09 am
Oh poor Crush, I have a 5 year old dachsund that looks just like Crush. She jumped off our couch and ruptured a disc, I would have to sell 1 thousand sweater patterns to pay her surgery off. What a clever weinnie dog owner you are. Good Luck Crush.
May 2nd, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Poor little pup! I saw the sweater on Ravelry and thought it was really cute! When I saw that it is a fundraiser for vet bills, I really wanted to help. What a great idea! I will knit it for my little grand daughter. Thank you and good luck to Crush.
May 4th, 2010 at 5:12 am

I bought “Willie” today! It’s too cute; sorry about the circumstances that generated it…
Tips to keep a convalescing dog occupied: Any kind of toy that you can hide treats in and the pup has to work to get them out (e.g., Busy Buddy). I have a Toy Fox Terrier that spent 14 WEEKS in crate confinement while recovering from his broken leg. Those toys helped all of us survive.
May 11th, 2010 at 1:14 am
Just had to let you know that I was working on willie at work yesterday and all my coworker just loved him. So bset wishes to you crush .
May 12th, 2010 at 9:40 am
A friend’s grandchild will love this sweater. Best thoughts for poor Willie for a quick uneventful recovery. He looks very sweet. It is so hard to see a beloved pet in pain. Please add a pat for us.
May 18th, 2010 at 10:23 am
Poor Crush! I always feel so sad to see little animals hurting - the poor charmer. My little man’s birthday just passed, but I’m totally going to make him this for Christmas! Thanks, and hope Crush is all healed up soon!
May 21st, 2010 at 5:43 am
This is perfect! As a first grade teacher, who teaches “Whistle for Willie” this must be on my to do list this summer! Plus, I have a new nephew who will need it when he grows into it…
Very cute. Hope the pup is mending.
May 21st, 2010 at 8:15 am
Well, the Willie pattern is sure to please my little girl who is absolutely in love with dogs. And, I just have to add that if I ever get a dog it is going to be a dachshund. They are so damn cute! I hope the Crushinator is back in business very soon. Best wishes to you and Crush!

Being a fellow weiner dog lover I had to have this pattern.
I have a silver dapple so I ordered black and gray yarn for my “Charlie” and the Foxy Fuchsia. Got a really good deal at DBNY.com on the Louet Riverstone Chunky.
My granddaughter is crazy of our dauchshund so I know she will love this sweater.

June 2nd, 2010 at 4:31 pm
Aw. So sad about Crush. My dog’s name is Steamboat Willie, so he and I are extra happy to buy your cardigan pattern to help cover vet bills. I have a young friend that has a dachshund/beagle mix that looks like a wiener dog on stilts. She will be the lucky recipient of the finished cardi that I knit.
June 3rd, 2010 at 11:21 am
Our sweet (rescue) dog looks like a wiener/collie mix (think long and low with looooong fur and fluffy tail), and my 1 year old is as in love with him as the rest of our family is. I can’t wait to knit this for her! Best wishes for a (hopefully recovered by now) Willie, and thanks for a great pattern!

I just told my FOUR wienerdogs about poor Crush and they wish to send their condolences. They tell him that he just needs to relax for a while and lap up mountains of attention from those who love him, and he will soon be running about again. Can’t wait to knit the sweater (I will add a bit dappling to the wienerdog to match my girls). Thanks - and best wishes to both you and Crush.
