Name This Monkey: A Flint Knits Contest

I crafted (instead of just buyin’)
a gift for my awesome friend Ryan.
But what did I make?
A bird, or a snake?
or a hippo? or penguin? or lion?

Though Ryan’s a dreadful pool-shooter,
he couldn’t be smarter or cuter.
But to my dismay,
he lives far away,
so we chat a lot on the computer.

And on G-Chat’s weird smiley-designer
there’s a monkey! Oh, what could be finer?
(Though, once it’s assembled,
it also resembles
a hamburger or a vaginer.)

(seriously. if you use gchat, try it.) :(|)

So yarn and some beads (two the same)
and stuffing and beans soon became
this birthday gift of
a monkey to love.
Now won’t someone give it a name?

No monkey deserves this position,
to suffer this name-less condition.
No more can we stall it!
But what shall we call it?
Please enter a contest submission.

Only one entry per knitter:
a name that will fit him (or fit her).
Then Ryan will choose
which handle to use
as the one he bestows on the critter.

Deadline: 11:59pm Eastern Time on Monday, March 17.
The winner will receive a $20 Wool Girl gift certificate.
Bring on the names!

pattern: Crocheted Monkey by ChimuChimu
yarn: Lana Grossa Meilenweit 50 Cotton, with pink Koigu KPM scraps

  1. How about Ragnar? What’s better than a Viking monkey?

  2. Virgil.

  3. Cute Monkey! My daughter says he’s funny, so his name should be Hilario!

  4. He looks like a Franklin to me. Franklin is very cute.

  5. i’d like to respond using verse
but the medium is just a bit terse
    i’ve picked out a name
    love playing your game
can’t wait to win the big purse!

    Meet . . . Gerald.

  6. oh my he’s adorable! you should make him up a little vest and a fez and he would be a little organ grinder monkey! i would name him newton. (i have no idea why, just my first instinct!)

  7. Lemon.

    I don’t know why.

  8. August!

  9. As I was looking at the pictures, the name “Samson” popped into my head. And I love him, he’s such a lovely fella!

  10. I think Ryan should name him Nigel.

  11. Hamilton Humphrey!

    But I vote for Hilario!!

  12. First of all your monkey has so much personality - really well done! I would name him “The Captain” in reference to Captain Flint and thereby also a namesake for the gifter. Monkeys can be notrious by nature so why not name him for an infamous pirate!

  13. Edmund.

  14. You are so awesome. Both the monkey and the poetry are fabulous.

And I think his name should be Harold.

[But I just saw that Minty is suggesting Gerald. Perhaps a compromise, and his name could be Gerald Herold? Oh, he poetic possibilities!]

  15. stanley. Or lloyd.

  16. yo! he be g’chat.

  17. Well, part of me thinks Ryan should love him and hug him and call him George, but for some reason “Bobke” popped into my head, which is humorously demented cyclist Bob Roll’s nickname.

  18. Mighty Manfred

  19. Cute! Cute! Cute! Marty the magnificent Monkey

  20. Polly? It’s been a long day, and that’s the best I can do.

  21. I love the presentation, and your monkey looks better neked! (than the pattern that is)

His name should be Bertrand. Just ’cause.

  22. Okay, I wrote a comment about half an hour ago and it never went through.

First, you are awesome. I love the monkey and I love the poem. Fabulous, both.

Secondly, my suggestion is Harold. That’s what I immediately thought when I saw him. Then I saw that Minty suggested Gerald. So maybe great minds think sort of alike? Or perhaps Ryan the monkey could have two names? Think of the poetic possibilities!

There once was a monkey named Gerald.
Or possibly he was named Harold.
    The prize could be split
    With Freshy the Mint,
If Ryan would name him Gerald Harold.

  23. Okay, I’m an idiot. My comment did go through (despite the “internal error” message). And, as a bonus, now you have three posts from me. Yes, I am a dork.

The Gerald Harold the Super Monkey, however, still rocks.

  24. Very cute. Heh, I can’t remember what life was like before I read the word vaginer.

I’d say go for Spanky. Or Cheeky.

  25. Harvey the Bunny!

    even though he’s a monkey.

  26. loved the poem!

he seems like an Archibald to me.

  27. I think I like Sprocket as an ode to the SNL skit…

  28. Oh my god. This is the most awesome post in the history of knit blogging. I have no name that is worth of your monkey or your limericks. Seriously, designer/finer/vaginer?

Or, actually, I do have one: George Gordon, Lord Byron. Mr. “But–Oh! ye lords of ladies intellectual/ Inform us truly, have they not hen-pecked you all?” would be deeply impressed.

  29. Baloo.

  30. George Burns.

    Seriously.

  31. I’m really diggin’ your piece
It’s nice that he’s not made of fleece.
He has a glint in his eye
and I think that is why
You really should name him Maurice!
    :(|)

  32. I guess I’m late in my vote. I’d like to second Sarah’s vote of Virgil. He does so look like a thinker. If the name wins…let it go to her…she looks as if she needs a bit of inspiration!

  33. Oh my god, I love that monkey. Why don’t I crochet? Why?? I may have to really try again to learn, now that I’ve seen the cuteness.

My favorite name for a monkey is Major Bananas - but since there already exists a hand-crafted monkey with that name (currently living with my niece), how about Colonel Bananas? Or Sergeant Bananas? Or Brigadeer General Bananas? The recipient could choose the rank…

  34. I like the name Crochet (pronounced like rocket) for this monkey!

  35. I’m sorry, I was so stuck on the word “vaginer” that I think it MUST be the monkey’s name.

If you don’t take it, the next thing I come across in my house that needs a name is getting it.

  36. My lovely honey thinks that she looks like a Sarah. Simple but oh so sweet. Sarah means princess so actually she is in disguise as a simple ape destine to be queen of her people.

  37. Marly or Merlin the Monkey I think.

  38. MiSure Missu
is my daughter’s suggestion 9 me sure miss you)

  39. Blossom.
    Or B.D.
    Short for Blossom Dearie.
Whose breathy intonations and meaningful pauses are perfectly suited to your verses. So now I shall not rest until I convince her to record it.
If that’s not quite the vibe you were after, I’m sure she could be convinced to rock out ;)

  40. Joseph

  41. super cute monkey haha :]

hmmm a name for this cure creature?
    … Jimmy!

  42. He looks like a wily one, I’d go with Mischief!

  43. I vote for George.
In my world, monkeys are always called George.

  44. michele trimble Says:

    Sancho

  45. Digbi.

  46. OMG he’s so cute!!

    I’m thinking he’s an Elmer.

  47. How about Snatch?;)

  48. Momo. I know it’s kind of like Spot or Fluffy….. but it does fit. Or Momo Skinny Legs.

  49. Sticks!

  50. Egads he’s cute! Hmmm, ooh, how about Egads?

  51. Giles.

  52. I love your poem!

I think the monkey looks like Aaron.

  53. Gilbert!!!

  54. i love this monkey! What about Maurice?

  55. Lewis!

  56. Hector!

  57. The poses are so frikkin hilarious!
I say Théodore, Léon or Gérard, because he looks like a seductive French Monkey to me :p

  58. Obviously he should be called Bryan - Ryan’s monkey Bryan.

Well, it was obvious in my version of a mind…

  59. Mern.

    Because:
    1. I like alliteration.
    2. The name Mern cracks me up.

  60. Max.
    He’s awfully cute. :)

  61. I dunno, when I looked at him the name Willis came to mind. Willis the naughty little monkey .

  62. Mortimer.

  63. love this post! we have a famous chimp called julius in norway - he had his own children’s tv series when i was little, (now he’s fat and cranky and a bit of a hit with the chimp ladies). thus, i suggest julius.

  64. my vote is for pleepleus (”plee-plee-us”)

  65. ApeApe!

My nephew names all his toys with two of whatever noise they make (cats are meowmeow, dogs are woofwoof, etc). Monkeys make rather odd sounds so I thought of ApeApe instead. I think it’s cute, ApeApe the monkey.

By the way, that’s a great gift, I hope Ryan loves it!

  66. Floyd.

  67. Hmmm, first Murphy came to mind. I vaguely remember a monkey that was battery operated on a silk hanging vine given to hubby as a joke named murphy monkey. But your monkey looks more like an Ollie (or Oliver for formalities) to me

  68. That poem was pretty cute. Will you be writing about all your FOs in that manner from now on? Hehe.

I suggest the name Mitchell. Its pretty versatile. He could be just Mitch or he can use Mitchell on his resume.

  69. In my years as an android,
I met a monkey named Floyd,
    He couldn’t have been sweeter,
    cuter or neater,
and thus I submit for consideration
a name I hold in such veneration.

    Floyd. :)

  70. p.s. dang just realized someone else already suggested the same name I did. but they didn’t rhyme it… ;)

  71. sarah jane Says:

I vote for Herbert, in honor of a one-eyed stuffed frog I know. (Although George Burns was a pretty funny suggestion).

  72. How about ella?

  73. All this talk of vaginers makes me feel like this little monkey has a feminine, gamine quality.

Maybe she’s not Harold but Maude

  74. Earl. It’s what popped in my head as soon as I saw him. He’s very cute!

  75. Maybe I’m childish but all I can think of is Spank. As in Monkey Spank. Or maybe Spanky for when one is in polite company.

  76. Malcom!

  77. His name shall be Chester.

  78. I read this post and its photos with glee,
Since he’s really the cutest monkey
    That I ever seed,
    And I’m feeling the need
    To christen his monkeyness Stanley.

    (Rhyming is hard!)

  79. Giggles

  80. Chief of Mischief

  81. Burger. I don’t know why.

  82. soooooooooo cute!

i’m gonna say Walcott, there’s something striking about a monkey whose name suggests he lives in Cape Cod and wears top-siders.

  83. Aww what a cute lil’ monkey!! Great contest too Pam!

    hmmm, how about Sammy?

  84. I’m submitting the name Oliver.

  85. You win the prize for awesomest entry EVER! The poem, the contest, AND (not least) the monkey! He is cuteness all over. How about Ace?

  86. His name is Hang.

  87. I think his name is G. Just G — but usable as in, G-Monkey. (G-money?) G-mail chat icon. G-not-George. Yo, G.

  88. Milton!

  89. The little monkey’s so cute
All he needs is a hat and a suit
    To be a real dude,
    You could call him Jude,
That’s the name for which I will root!

So I suggest Jude (the Dude)

  90. blogless in NJ Says:

Oh call him Zephyr (like the monkey in Babar).

    He’s so awesomely cute!

  91. Linda in Chicagoland Says:

    Pal!

  92. Too funny!!! I love the silly postitions! My daughter says it’s name should be Bananas.

  93. The monkey is so cute!

I was going to say Chester, but someone already suggested that. :-( Well, if not Chester… maybe Charlie?

  94. Jersey Jessie Says:

    This monkey is certainly sweet,
I know that his REAL NAME is Pete,
    He has a smart look,
    Like he’s reading a book,
He’s a guy I’d sure like to meet!

    Fun, fun, fun contest.

Ryan - pick Pete (it’s his REAL NAME afterall)

  95. Ye Gads! Look how many people have already entered! Yeesh.

    I propose Kofi.

NB Kofim means monkeys in Hebrew.

  96. I think you should knit him a red fooshy cape and a leather diaper and call him Leonidas.

  97. So cute! Zeke?

  98. Jesus, you’re smart.

Ray. I nominate Ray. Because in that second shot, he has this very cool Ray Charles dark glasses vibe going on.

  99. I for some reason can’t can Shamus out of my head :) Cute monkey!

  100. This is definitely the most original posting! What a fabulous poem. It seems to me Wickersham would be quite fitting. The Wickersham brothers are a mischievous trio of monkeys in Horton Hears a Who.

  101. You and this monkey could not be cuter.

Hugo seems like a good name for a monkey (as well as a chihuahua, actually).

  102. Gleek. The space monkey from that cartoon The Wonder Twins…

  103. There once was a very cool monkey,
He loved to climb up a tree trunky,
    He lived in the trees,
    He swung by his knees,
His demeanor and name were both Funky.

Hey Ryan, it’s the Funky Monkey

  104. A monkey that looks like that can only be Curious George. I guess I’ve been indoctrinated by my childhood.

  105. Glad to see that Gleek made the list, and since George would be obvious, how ’bout Harrison?

  106. His name should be Charlie. Simple and sweet Charlie

  107. Roger. Not sure why. Just ’cause.

  108. Mustard Jar!

As in, “I’ll lick you out like a g**d**n m*th*rf*ck*n’ mustard jar.”

  109. Ok, so my favorite cute-and-smart-but-too-far-away friend created an animated cartoon a few years ago called Monkey Ninjas. The two main characters, who are obviously both monkeys and ninjas, are named Carl and Phil. So watch an episode and take your pick as to which name suits your monkey.

    http://www.monkeyninjas.com :)

  110. The problem when I see monkeys of any kind is that a face is immediately associated with them (the result of so many received email jokes over the past 8 years). And while I wouldn’t want to tarnish your monkey, I have to go with the name of that face. It’s George. But not George as in Curious. Nope, George as in W. I know, it deserves better!

  111. Cheeky!!

  112. Flinger for a girl…

    Gaylord for a boy…

  113. Why not “Mercury” the messenger monkey? Roman Gods rule!

  114. Hmm.. If it’s a girl, then Goodall, for Jane Goodall.

If it’s a boy, then Shakespeare, because if you give an infinite amount of monkeys on typewriters an infinite amount of time . . .

  115. ha! cute poem.

I vote for the name Dizzle. It how monkeys make me feel inside.

  116. awww, Mr. P is so cute. he has a great smile

  117. My nickname as a child was Monkey, and I call my youngest Monkeybutt, I am very partial to Monkeys.
    How about Flint?

  118. Briggle.

    ‘Cuz it sounds funny.

  119. Clyde. It just popped in my head the moment I laid eyes on him.

  120. Antspants… I like the sound of that for a cheeky little monkey!

  121. Grape. Like Grape Ape.
Did I just totally date myself……..?

  122. love the poses! he’s quite photogenic! :)
how ’bout naming him noodle? like one of the characters from the “band” gorillaz?

  123. chaco?

  124. I’m having a hard time narrowing it down to just one name. At first I was thinking Long Legged Lance. But now I think I like YoSimian Sam better. Feel free to disqualify me based on my two entries!

  125. my daughter thing you should name him “Fred” after her siamese fighting fish… lol…

  126. Monkey McMonkerson!

  127. stanley… or winston.

  128. Harald.

  129. Zozo! My childhood rocked a bit on its foundations when I encountered Curious George one day: in Britain, that same cheeky chimo was called Zozo. (According to Wikipedia this was to avoid the monkey having the same name as the king. ??). The other mischievous monkey I grew up with, my younger sister Zoe, is still inevitably called Zozo, and she rocks

  130. Chimp. That was meant to say chimp. Although chimo is quite a nice word, now I’ve typed it :)

  131. I think Bokito…after the most famous ape of The Netherlands…but this one looks a lot sweeter

  132. Mungo

  133. Mojo.

Like Homer Simpson’s Helper Monkey (Pray…for…Mojo…)

  134. Momo.

  135. He looks like a Cheeky.
    WPGGAL

  136. Momo

  137. he looks like a Mr. Cutypants to me! he is so adorable! And great pics of him too!

  138. Momo

  139. She’s adorable! And I’m pretty sure her name is Maureen.

  140. I’ve always been a big fan of the name, Mr. Crazybones, for funny animals ;)

  141. Bernie

  142. That monkey is Chaz, for sure.

  143. Leroy!

  144. Bruce. Mainly because if you say it loud and for a long time, it sounds super funny. Broooooooose!

  145. I’ve thought long and hard about this… and for me it’s Winston P. Apenstein

  146. The reason it took me so long to leave this comment is that i had to scroll past 145 of them. Holy batman, that’s a lot of comments.

  147. LOVE your new diggs!

  148. I love the new blog!!! The design is just perfect! :)

  149. Thelonius!

  150. […] having a monkey naming contest. Leave your suggestion by 11:59 pm EDT, March 16, and you could win a $20 WoolGirl gift […]

  151. A monkey you know has two armpits,

  152. The monkey was made with two armpits
and soon he’ll be scratching them in fits,
    He’s bound to be found
    clowin around
and therefore his name should be KNitwit.

    except he’s crocheted.
    but that don’t fit!

  153. Don Knotts.

  154. Okay Pam. Here is goes. I didn’t think I would enter the contest but I will….I’ll suggest my nickname as the Monkey Man’s name…..drum roll…..

    Snuffywump.

I know..it’s goofey. And it lends itself to several different variations that my husband mockingly calls me as well…such as

    Snuffywumpus, Snufftyrump etc. etc.

And of course…he also calls me Snuggle Chunk as well….but….umm….you get the idea.

  155. Toby. He looks like a Toby to me.

  156. Herman.

  157. I’m thinking he looks like a Jorge. He reminds me of a college friend with that nickname due to his goofy lankiness while maintaining a real ladies’ man quality.
Also, his name while in the witness protection program should be Fernando.

  158. I like Maude. And Wickersham. But he looks like a complex and sneaky monkey to me. I vote for Barabbas.

  159. My five year daughter suggest “Nanners” b/c monkeys like ‘nanners, right?

  160. Cha-cha!

  161. You could name him Kanzi, after Sue Savage-Rumbaugh’s bonobo who has startling language comprehension ability.

  162. I’m not sure whether it’s been suggested yet of not, but the first name I thought of was Hobey. I don’t know why.

  163. Can I just say that this here could be a reason to try crochet… SO CUTE!
I want to name him curious george, but that is so unoriginal… you could name him after a mon chichi though :)

  164. Sorry to be so generic, but it’s George.

  165. In honour of the “vaginer” line: A girl I knew in elementary school used the word “Peachka” for her lady parts. Could be an okay name, n’est pas?

  166. Love the monkey… hope it’s not too late for a submission.

Trying the get into the mind frame of a little boy here… I’m thinking of a cousin who had an imaginary friend named “Casserole” and I think that could be a good name… but I also like the name “Broccoli” for a monkey for some reason haha. “Myles”, “Niles” or “Nigel” could work as well if the food names are no good. Oh or “Lanky” because of the long legs and arms :o).

    Fun contest!

  167. Oh and the new site looks good!

  168. I just recently had to explain to my 10 year old daughter what a banana hammock is. In honor of that, I think my suggestion will be to name him Speedie. (Thought process goes like this…monkeys eat bananas=banana hammock=speedo bathing suits=speedie…yes I need my kids to get well so I can get out of the house!) If I had a cool monkey like that, I would name him Speedie and then giggle every time I told anyone what his name was with them being none the wiser.

  169. Wait, March 16th is a Sunday, not a Monday right? Does that mean the deadline is the 17th? St. Patrick’s day? Should the name be Kelly (as in green) or Erin or something?

  170. He’s very cute … and looks quite wise.

I don’t think anyone has picked Darwin yet (and his nickname could be Chuck)

  171. Ichabod. Or Heinrich.

  172. I’m agreeing with the G theme (for Gmail). So my suggestion is Godfrey.

  173. Ginger! :)

  174. I’ve read through all the comments and don’t think anyone has suggested the name I think he should be called. I think he looks like an Aimsley.

  175. Butch

  176. Jordie. Very cute monkey.

  177. harvey!

    he is adorable

  178. I would name him Breathless, simply because he has no nostrils. Poor little guy.

  179. I think her name is Molly. I didn’t even think about the St. Patty’s Day connection until I saw Tori’s post, but I was also humming Keg of Brandy while I read through the previous suggestions (”…And while I’m drinking, I’m always thinking of lovely Molly, from the County Clare”).

  180. Gretchen (brownbear) Says:

    Cute. How about buttons?

  181. TripletMom Says:

    Agamemnon

  182. I vote for Trouble. :)

  183. You could call him Lazzaro. For his nickname it could be Lazy. He doesn’t appear, from these photos, to get up to much work.

  184. Merlin. Merlin the monkey is my vote… He just looks like a Merlin to me!

  185. I think the monkey looks like a Hank.

  186. Only a monkey named Ambrose could lounge in such a way.

  187. I think he looks like a Horatio.

  188. Cholemondeley, pronounced “Chumley”

  189. I like the name

    Rimac or Rymac

  190. he reminds me of a friend from college…Andrew.

  191. Love the monkey! The only stuffed animal I kept from childhood was a monkey I got when I was four and named . . . Monkey! There was Pig and Puppy, too. So I’m not very creative in the naming department. Maybe Monkey-Luv?

  192. i would have to say weston
it’s better than hal or a preston
    this monkey’s got style
    to last for a while
and nothing seems to impress him.

  193. Simmy…short for Simian.

  194. The only possible name for your monkey is what has already been deemed the greatest dog name in the world. I personally think it may be too much for a dog to handle, but I’m sure your monkey is up to the task. The only name for that monkey is Pasta-Batman.

(Also, I will be in the middle of the desert when this contest ends, so if you agree that the best monkey name, ever, is Pasta-Batman, I will not be available to bask in my glory until March 23.)

  195. I would name him Smokey because he looks like a blind blues band member in the second photo.

  196. I definitely think he looks like a Desmond.

  197. You know how people say “I laughed so hard coffee came out my nose?” And they’re usually lying, but that just happened to me at the “vaginer” rhyme. One mis-timed snort and a sip of tea and there is “Hibiscus Paradise” all over my pajamas.

I’m going to go with Nim, for Nim Chimpsky and his namesake.

  198. There once was a GMonk whose name
    “Adorable George” was proclaimed;
    But on closer inspection
    Of gender intention,
We’ll have Georgia, not quite the same.

(No, I didn’t pore over the sweeties private parts, but I did sorta automatically refer to her as “she”…)

  199. Oh so so adorable
    Wish I could do that
    But it’s not quite probable
So I thought of the name Mat
But didn’t like the way it sat
Thought “Looks more like a PIP”
    Or something close
    Like maybe Kip
But didn’t like that the most

    No that just doesn’t fit
I think I’ll go with Skip

    Thanks for the contest.

  200. Please consider Filbert.

It isn’t a name, but it SOUNDS like a name, which is the best of both worlds for a monkey. And it’s also a tasty nut, which dear Filbert sort of resembles, unlike his gchat namesake, which does indeed resemble a more female bit of anatomy. (Of course, I meant that the monkey resembles the ACTUAL nut, which happens to share a name with the slang term for a reproductive organ… oh never mind. What I’m saying is that I’m not comparing your lovely crochet work to a testicle. I’d better stop talking.)

  201. i think thomas would work.
    he’s really cute.

  202. Shambles!

  203. Harvey. Definitely Harvey. He looks like a wallbanger, doesn’t he?

    Great saga!

  204. Ramona Bananapants.

  205. […] Flint Knits: If you would like to be overcome with delight, please read about the dog sweater and the monkey. […]

  206. […] monkey! […]

  207. […] monkey! […]

  208. VAGINER!!!
am i the only one who spewed when they saw that?

  209. I, too, can not remember my life before “vaginer”. Having newly discovered this blog, WILL BE BACK.
