Autumn Aran Sock #1
Japanese book New Style of Heirloom Knitting.
yarn: Koigu premium merino, #1110
needles: 2.5mm Addi lace circular
There are definitely some changes I’ll make for the second sock. For one thing, I’ll flip the chart to make the right and left sock mirror images of each other.
I’m also going to use a short-row heel instead of Wendy’s fabulous toe-up gusset heel. This was the first time I’d used Wendy’s new tutorial, and I’ll definitely use it again — especially with my high instep. But I think a short row heel will look neater and more compact with this sock, and the stitch patterns have enough flexibility that I think it will still fit well.

Question: Should I also run a line of 1-2 purl stitches along the underside of the cable, to make it stand out from the sole? Initially, I liked how the cable looked melting into the sole stitches, but since I want the purl stitches to run alongside it on the leg, it might make more sense to have them just run the whole length of the sock.
All in all, I’m pleased with and proud of this little baby, and am thinking seriously about writing out the pattern.

This is gorgeous! I like the pattern as is- the cable does melt into the sole…and yet, it shows really nicely. Beautiful!
October 17th, 2007 at 12:43 am
Hey, that’s beautiful. Great meshing of color and pattern. Wow, it reminds me of the fact that I really do love fall.
October 17th, 2007 at 1:07 am
Oooh, I didn’t even notice the differing back action and cable from your flickr photos. Love them! I kind of like the cable without a purl stitch, but I bet that popular opinion will swing the other way.
All in all it looks really great!
October 17th, 2007 at 1:39 am
Yes, yes!! Please do!! I want one!
October 17th, 2007 at 2:00 am
Cool sock! I remember you were worried it might feel bulky in a shoe. What’s the verdict?
I would do purl stitches all along the cable to make it stand out on the foot better, mostly so that it’ll match the leg.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:00 am
Those are amazing! I sincerely hope you publish the pattern. I will be all over it!
October 17th, 2007 at 2:07 am
y’know, this would look great as a fancy cabled armwarmer, too. though your sock is absolutely beautiful.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:19 am
You MUST write out the pattern!
What a wonderful design! And if I was 1/2 way savvy in knitting socks I could give some input to your question! LOL :op
October 17th, 2007 at 2:21 am
oh, please do write out a pattern. this sock is just too pretty.
and yes, continue the purl row(s) all the way down the sock.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:21 am
I love the sock pattern just the way it is. It is beautiful, and I cant wait until you write the pattern up. Your so clever.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:22 am
It’s so beautiful — love the color too!
October 17th, 2007 at 2:33 am
You should write it out. It’s a gorgeous sock!
October 17th, 2007 at 2:51 am
You definitely should write it up.. it’s beautiful!
October 17th, 2007 at 3:11 am
Please write it up - I’d love to knit these. You’ve done an awesome job with the first sock, and the whole pair is going to be gorgeous!
Oh, and to answer yur question, I kinda like the cable the way it is.
October 17th, 2007 at 3:13 am
Oh, please write up the pattern. It’s gorgeous! (And perfet as is)
October 17th, 2007 at 3:14 am
Yeah, that would be “perfect”…
October 17th, 2007 at 3:18 am
Those are Lovely! I also vote for a pattern write up. And on an oddly personal note~~ I’m jealous of your pretty feet! :^)
October 17th, 2007 at 3:31 am
oh please oh please write up the pattern - I know I’ve already told you I love that sock, but I’ll tell ya again - I love it! So perfect for fall! Am I gushing? Apparently a little too obsessed with acorns and oak leaves….
October 17th, 2007 at 4:27 am
Looks great! I would add the purl stitches–I do think it would make the pattern pop more.
October 17th, 2007 at 4:54 am
Like I said over at Flickr: I hope you’re considerig selling this pattern.
October 17th, 2007 at 6:26 am
Oh yes…pattern pretty, pretty please?
I like how the cable is right now. It is very subtle in its cable-y-ness.
October 17th, 2007 at 7:01 am
I do think you should write it up - it is beautiful and well-crafted. I actually like the cable stitches folding into the sole without the purl background.
(that’s a neat single sock photo idea!)
But the bare foot next to the socked one distracted me, so I might not have looked carefully enough…
October 17th, 2007 at 7:14 am
It’s a great sock and I think you should really write down the pattern.
October 17th, 2007 at 8:03 am
Wow, Pam! The back looks just as gorgeous as the front. This sock is pretty with a capital P.R.E.T.T.Y!
And don’t think i won’t be keeping an eye on you and making sure that you jump off the bandwagon of single sock knitting to complete this pair. It’s called tough love, baby. ;0)
October 17th, 2007 at 9:19 am
Lovely pattern. I have a similar pattern here somewhere, I should try transferring it to a pair of socks. But say, wouldn’t the leaves be annoying if you’re wearing shoes?
October 17th, 2007 at 9:41 am
Beautiful sock, Pamela! I think I’d refer the purl column to continue on the leg, but it’s pretty this way too.
October 17th, 2007 at 10:06 am
Please write it up and sell it - I for one would gladly buy it. (I have been sitting here on tenterhooks every since you first showed a glimpse of this sock
October 17th, 2007 at 11:44 am
oh yes, a pattern, please! that is one beautiful sock!
btw, i’m not sure how feasible this is with a toe-up, but i would love to see the leaf pattern run up the back of the leg starting from the heel flap. not exactly the stuff you wear with shoes, no …
October 17th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
You should be very proud - that is one awesome sock!!! I think I’d run the column of purl stitches down - that would be a nice touch.
October 17th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
wow, that sock turned out awesome. you should definitely write up a pattern!
October 17th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
I agree - gorgeous sock, and I will throw in another vote for the purl stitches.
Smiles,
Erin

Very pretty! I like the critical analysis and request for comments after the first sock, too. It’s nice to get the community involved sometimes
As for the cable, I can’t decide which option I like better. They would both look great!
October 17th, 2007 at 4:37 pm
Beautiful. What fun to see how Autumn Song translates into a gorgeous sock.
I vote for the purls, but it looks nice the way it is as well.
October 17th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Very, very cool sock - I like the non-purlness of it.
October 17th, 2007 at 4:46 pm
Pattern? Definitely! Gorgeous sock!
October 17th, 2007 at 6:22 pm
don’t write it up! keep it a big secret and tell people these socks are the only ones of its kind in existence.
kidding! just wanted to be contrary. that sock (and the photos) are gorgeous.
October 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
How lovely! What a great idea to transform the aran sweater into the aran sock. Love the autumnal color too!
October 17th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Yowza. That is gorgeous. I love the yarn you chose, too.
October 17th, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Those autumn leaves are just too precious and pretty.
October 17th, 2007 at 7:19 pm
those are sooo beautiful!
wonderful job!
October 17th, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Wow! Write that pattern out and slap a Paypal button on your blog and it’ll be good bye academia!!!
October 17th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Wow, please write out the pattern, I love them. I’m so impressed that you designed them yourself!
October 17th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
please write pattern.
October 18th, 2007 at 12:55 am
gorgeousness. will the bobbles feel funny under a boot?
I vote for no purl. I love the meltiness.
October 18th, 2007 at 1:42 am
They are *gorgeous!* I vote for purl stitches! And I also vote for a written up pattern. These are spectacular!
October 18th, 2007 at 1:58 am
You should, write the pattern up that is. And I would add the purls. That’s just the way I am.
October 18th, 2007 at 3:58 am
Now that’s one gorgeous sock! You have very pretty feet BTW! I don’t have a foot fetish - just so you don’t think I’m weird - or maybe you do already.
October 18th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
I like the way the cable melts into the sole, personally. I see your point, but it’s sort of a different detail, and so much about these socks are different!
Here at your disposal to proof the pattern whenever you need, as you know.
October 18th, 2007 at 4:07 pm
These socks are gorgeous. You should definitely write up the pattern, the color is sooo pretty too. very very nice.
October 18th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Gorgeous socks! I love the colour too. I was going to try that gusset heel from Wendy’s blog, on my next pair of socks.
I’ve tagged you for a meme on my blog, Pam. I’m not sure if you’ve done it already or not?? Anyway, come on over and have a peek!
October 18th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
those are some fancy pants socks! i love them!
October 18th, 2007 at 10:25 pm
So you are planning to make a fraternal second sock, with a different heel and possibly the purl border? Or are these ideas for the second pair?
(Lovely work by the way.)
October 19th, 2007 at 12:48 am
So gorgeous
October 19th, 2007 at 1:19 am
Gorgeous! I hope you write the pattern. I like how the cable melts into the sole.
October 19th, 2007 at 3:32 am
Beautiful sock!!!
October 19th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
beautiful, beautiful!
October 19th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
pam=amazing. the sock, rocks.
October 20th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
you’re pretty amazing! those are the perfect, perfect autumn socks.
October 20th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
wow, really similar to a jumper cable panel I just converted into a sock! (which I’ll post about some time this weekend…)
Branches on the sides of feet are a great thing - and perfect for jumping in autumnal piles of leaves!
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:05 am
I don’t think the purl row is necessary - up to you really. You should be proud of the sock, it’s a beauty!!
October 22nd, 2007 at 4:12 pm
Fantabulous! I vote no on the demarcating purl stitch–they always seem to gape unevenly. But maybe that’s my crap knitting.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:57 am
Haven’t had time to catch up with your blog for a while and boy have you been busy! Love all the projects you’ve recently completed esp the summer shawlette - your photos look way better than the ones in IWK.
October 28th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
Seriously hoping you publish the pattern before the holidays! They’re very beautiful socks!
