fingerless mitts for fall
When I saw that photo in my last post, it hit home just how sad and tired my old fingerless mitts are. I made them from some truly ugly acrylic yarn (I got 2 skeins free at a garage sale) when Melanie Falick’s Weekend Knitting first came out, and have worn them like a second skin ever since. And acrylic? Not so much with the hard-wearing.
Since these are the fastest, easiest mitts ever, I pulled Weekend Knitting back out this weekend and, in between grading midterms (will it never end?), got started on a new pair.
Eventually, the knitting got done, though quite a few papers remain.
pattern: Fingerless Mitts, by Ann Budd, from Melanie Falick’s Weekend Knittingyarn: 1.5 balls Rowan Cotton Tape
needles: 6.5mm bamboo

(Are you knitting mitts too? Then join in the Fingerless Mitts for Fall knitalong. There’s a great list of free patterns on the sidebar.)
p.s. Why can’t I do a three-needle bind-off that disappears into garter stitch??

It looks like you’re well prepared for the chilly weather! I love that color, and you can’t beat the price
October 15th, 2007 at 7:48 pm
i think i might have to copy you and knit me a pair of these for myself. love them.
and that scarf is to die for! ahhh!
October 15th, 2007 at 7:54 pm
They look quite sproingy and squishy! Love!
Now, if only I can get Ashley to make me an obi scarf…

hi there — I’ve been reading your blog for a few months, but just started a knitting blog of my own, and thought I’d say hello. Your FOs are beautiful, and I love the mitts with the drops jacket. Thanks for the knitalong link!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Those mitts are the perfect pop of color for both outfits. Love the scarf!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
So cute! That was one of the first patterns I ever knit - ah the memories!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Lovely mitts, and a smashing autumn ensemble.
Grading… argh…
You won some bright-colored hand-dyed sock yarn in my blog contest. Send me an email with your snail mail address!
October 15th, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Very cute! Much nicer than the old ones.
Um, I have no clue about the 3-needle bind off…
October 15th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
Such a cute and easy pattern — those are the mitts in my blog banner. I love the colour of yours. (My bind-off is visible, too.)
October 15th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
Ooooh, I’ve got accessory envy now.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Thanks for the link to the KAL. Now I know what to do when I’m trying not to think of sewing the sleeves to my CPH.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
No, YOU are rad.
As for the 3-needle bindoff, I think, structurally, it can’t disappear, right? That is my one complaint bout these mitts–I’ve made a couple of pairs too, and the seam always looks crappy.
October 15th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Not that your mitts look crappy, btw–I heart them.
October 15th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Yep, it’s that time–I just dug out my Fetching mitts this morning, as my hands have begun to crack, right on schedule. They’re Cascade, though, and that’s a bit overkill. Cotton would be perfect right now. Love your coat!
October 15th, 2007 at 9:04 pm
I do believe you have just set off a new frenzy with this post. I predict these mitts become the new Chevron!!!
October 15th, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Ack! So freaking cute! The red is killing me. I have more WIPs than ever right now, but I want some of these. Dangit! Hmm…
October 15th, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Aieeee, you beat me to these! I just started mine - the same pattern - last weekend and was waiting to finish at least one before I posted about them. Yours look great, isn’t it a wonderful pattern?
October 15th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
And I totally meant to add - great minds think alike!
October 15th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
I forgot about this pattern. And I do need some mitts. I love yours, the color is spectacular.
October 15th, 2007 at 10:03 pm
Love these! They look great with your scarf and jacket. I’m going to have to pull out my book too.
October 15th, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Perfect yarn + colour choice! Is it that cold ocer there already??
October 15th, 2007 at 10:16 pm
Sadly, I think the only way to hide the three needle bind-off is to wear long sleeves.
I totally bought a sweater at the thrift store today just because it reminded me of your great drops jacket.
October 15th, 2007 at 10:48 pm
The mitts look great and I love the color. They look great with your scarf too, you trendy girl! I will have to take a peek at the KAL as I have never knit any mittens or gloves in my entire knitting life, shame on me.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
You know, I don’t think there is a way to hide the bindoff because the first row, the row after the cast-on that you’re picking up, is stockinette. I suppose you could purl all the rows instead of knit them and maybe you’d get a bind-off that fades into the garter, but ack, that’s a lot of purling. Even after knitting this pattern multiple times, I still have a hard time not getting a too-tight bindoff and so I always have to wear mine seam-out.
Love the red, I think my next pair will be from red Malabrigo.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
I love that pattern, I made several pair for family. Your red ones are perfect for the season and I like how the tape works for the mitts, I’m never sure what to do with tape yarn.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:42 pm
what a great way to get through grading! I usually use knitting to *avoid* grading, but I like your compromise.
New knit + graded test = priceless
October 15th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
I love your new mitts - very cute, and the red is very cheery. They go great with your rockin’ scarf. I’ve totally been there with the grading/knitting - sometimes it’s the only way to keep your sanity, y’know?
October 16th, 2007 at 12:31 am
cute!. i love the red. i’m pretty crushed out on the garter stitch at the moment, so i really love these!
i think i am the only knitter on earth who has never made fingerless mitts, and i wear store-bought ones all the time!
October 16th, 2007 at 12:57 am
Love them! I have yet to pull out that book and make something out of it! Haha! Great way that you busted your stash!
And I see your drop sweater is like second skin now too! I gotta make that! ;oD
October 16th, 2007 at 2:03 am
The mitts look awesome…and there is that cardigan! I love that cardigan!
October 16th, 2007 at 3:05 am
They are beautiful and that scarf is so yummy!
October 16th, 2007 at 10:29 am
Nice mitts! Naturally, I learn about the KAL when I have only the thumb left to do on my 2nd mitt. Then again, can you have too many pairs? Can you say, holiday knitting?
October 16th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
that’s one of my favorite fingerless mitts patterns
simple and easy yet totally worthy of wearing all the time.
October 16th, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Awesome mitts! I love how they look with your wonderful sweater!
I am not familiar with the pattern, but would a garter stitch graft work instead of a three needle bind off? EZ describes it in one of her books, and it’s super easy. Not that it’s any use to you now…
October 16th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
fingerless mitts are a fall essential - I have a few pairs and wear them to death!!!
October 16th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Love the color, style, and scarf. Very rockin’ combo!
October 16th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Those look great. The color pops so well with your other winter gear!
October 16th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
The rich red really picks up the jewel tones in your scarf. They look fantastic together.
October 16th, 2007 at 11:05 pm
What a perfect Autumn ensamble!
I’ve been meaning to make a pair of those mitts with the rest of the yarn from the Zeebee that I knit a few weeks ago. Thanks for the reminder. A quick, simple knit might be just the thing tonight.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:40 am
You have given me a great idea for using up the last couple of balls of this yarn. They look great.
October 19th, 2007 at 1:17 am
Great mitts! They coordinate well with your scarf and sweater. I haven’t done a 3-needle bind off with garter stitch, but is it possible that you have to do it with the other sides facing than is done for st st?
October 19th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
I guess it’s the weather. I’ve been knitting mitts for the last month (between other projects).Your mitts are quite festive. Love the scarf too.
October 19th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
*envies the autumnal post* it’s still super hot in jersey. like mid 70’s. barf. i can’t wait to wear my woolens.
October 19th, 2007 at 11:14 pm
Great mitts! I love that pattern too; made 2 pair last year and made 2 pair just this past month; one for a friend’s mom and a pair for me out of Noro.
Thanks for sharing!
