damn, making stuff for babies is FUN!

Spent the weekend in upstate NY visiting my new itty bitty niece.

Thanks for all the advice and kind words about the baby sweater yarn trauma. I’m way behind on everything, so I’m truly sorry if I didn’t get to responding to your comment. It’s not because I don’t love you.

I’ve ordered another skein of the yarn, and will wait and see if the color matches up well enough. Some of you suggested just changing colors completely, which I would totally do on most sweaters. But the semi-solid yarn and the lace pattern on this one are so lovely together, I don’t want to complicate it with stripes or a color change.

I mean, she deserves the bestest little sweater I can give her, right?

In the meantime, she can grow into her BSJ and her new sun suit.

Pattern: Simplicity 3808 dress; McCalls m5303 pants
Fabric: American Jane Building Blocks by Sandy Klop
Mods? I made my own coordinating bias tape for the legs, instead of using store-bought.

I loved making this! The patterns were both pretty simple, although I have no idea how real sewers get elastic drawn through the wee channels where it belongs. I ended up applying some ghetto technology to a knitting tool:

Yep. It’s a length of elastic taped to a long circular needle. Worked like a charm.

And just one more gratuitous baby shot before I go.

Okay, maybe two.

  1. Ack! The baby cuteness. I love when they are that small and squishey. I hope the new skein will match up well enough. I love that color and lace patterning. I’ll keep my fingers crossed!

  2. Oh, Aunt Pam, she deserves something as rich and lovely as the red lacy February Sweater. Just darling.

I have about a million pictures of kids all scrunched up on people’s chests like that. Sooo snuggly. Except when their diaper leaks, of course.

  3. Oh, oh! The tree froggin’ pose! That was my favorite thing the newborn Biscuit did. Well, that and the huge, stretching yawns. Those were equally excellent.

  4. Aw!! She’s wonderful. And the sunsuit is painfully cute - the cute, it burns!

  5. oh my gosh. the cuteness has nearly made me speachless (speechless? clearly the cute has affected my spelling as well). that sunsuit is OUT OF CONTROL. i must get those immediately. i don’t currently know any girl babies, but i’m sure one will pop up sooner or later!

  6. Auntie Pam!;)

  7. aw, what a cutie! i love that frog sleep position on the chest. it’s so comforting to have a baby there, no?

  8. OMG! She is so precious!! What is her name? I love how she is already grabbing on your finger!! *gushes*

And how freakin cute is her sun suit.
She is definitely going to be spoiled with lots of especially made outfits!!

  9. She’s beautiful, and those are such sweet pictures. I love the little sunsuit…she’ll look adorable in it.

  10. She’s adorable! As is the sunsuit. I can’t wait to start knitting for my cousin’s baby due this winter.

With the elastic, I’ve always attached a safety pin to the elastic to guide it through. At least that’s what my mum showed me when she taught me to sew when I was little!

  11. She is so beautiful! Congrats again, Auntie Pam! And fantastic job on the sunsuit…I am in awe of your bias tape.

  12. Oh, she is just too adorable! Love the sunsuit and I too am bowing to your bias tape abilities. I’m just about to go upstairs and tackle some store bought stuff and that has me freaked out, let alone making it myself:-)

  13. Oh gosh Pam she’s *adorable*!!! I don’t go all gooey over baby pics but there’s something indescribably sweet and innocent about a baby napping like that. Plus, advance notice: if I ever have kids I’m placing an order for baby clothes with you, that set is lovely.

  14. Darling pictures. And I bow to the awesomeness of your matching bias binding. (My mom taught me to attach medium to large size safety pin to the end of the elastic, too.)

  15. I totally want a baby now. What a cutiepie! And you’re the best aunt ever, clearly, with all these amazing gifts.

  16. so cute. congratulations auntie.

  17. I love the matching bias tape; it really adds the perfect touch! Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the sweet baby.

  18. awwww - so cute!!! love your idea for getting elastic through. I usually use a safety pin, but I like your idea better!

  19. So cute :) And I love the sun suit, too!

My mom has a tool that’s a several inch rod with a little clamp on the end. Not too dissimilar to your solution :)

  20. that little outfit is so cute, almost as cute as that last pic.

    precious

  21. Awww. I have that same froggy-chest-sleeping picture of my nephew. There’s just something so endearing about it. Hooray for adorable, well-dressed nieces!

  22. You could use that baby for some serious evil…

  23. What a cute little (teeny tiny!) baby! And what great clothes to start her off on the right foot:)

  24. awww tiny little baby! amazingly cute outfit!

(the safety pin on elastic tip is used in norway, too)

  25. Geez, thanks a lot Pam. Like my biological clock needed any MORE help from the likes of painfully cute babies like your niece there. Oh well, don’t mind me…I ‘ll be playing with my substitutes — er, dogs — and muttering “not til you’re done with school, not til you’re done with school…”

Seriously though. That is a very, very cute baby and an outfit that is totally worthy of her.

  26. Auuuuuuuuuuughhhh, the cuteness! She is so wee!

Webs just got a giant Jaeger closeout and I’ve been stashing all this Matchmaker 4-Ply and asking myself, “is it weird to knit for my non-existent children? How weird?”

I only know two babies, hmph. I guess I’ll just start stockpiling it.

  27. Ohhh, so cute! I love the shot of her holding onto the finger!

I totally wish my sewing skills were up to the challenge of making the little outfit you just completed–so cute! You really did a fantastic job–ghetto skilz and all!

  28. Lovely job on the outfit. The custom bias tape really sets it apart. And terrific job as an auntie too. Don’t you just love having a special baby use you as their comfy napping spot?

  29. Your niece is very beautiful, and the sun suit is adorable! Well done, Pam! Glad you had time to go visit. You do know that making her clothes that cute will make you the go-to aunt when she needs a special dress?

  30. So cute baby! So cute sun suit! So clever you are with the circular needle. I gotta remember that trick. :)

  31. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! Sooo tiny! I forget that they come out that small! :-)
I just started on a similar baby sewing project that I’ll post about sometime next week but you have inspired me to find some great fabric and tackle another outfit!!!!! Yours looks so perfect!!! What style too. I love the fabric!

  32. I love everything about that baby dress set. Damn, so cute! And baby adorable-ness, ack!

  33. She’s too cute! And that outfit is adorable!

  34. I love this outfit! I dashed to the fabric store and bought those patterns and whipped up an outfit for my daughter. Thanks for the inspiration to return to sewing. I was taught to do the elastic the same as another commenter said to - using a safety pin.
