I have always depended on the kindness of crafters
THANK YOU for all the sweet birthday wishes, and for the kind (and hilarious) comments about my camera loss.
I had a spectacular birthday. And some kind soul found my camera right where I left it amid the quilting fabric at Jo Ann, and turned it in. Amazing. My faith in humanity? Not restored, exactly, but maybe a bit more robust than it was a week ago. My faith in crafters? Unshakable.
As much as I would love to share all of the Santa photos (which, by the way, are fully clothed and fully ridiculous), you’ll have to settle for a couple of the tamer ones here on my Flickr account. Trust me, it’s better this way. And there’s a knitters’ treat: Check out what I’m holding in that first photo! And if you look very closely at the second one (you know, in the middle distance, just past where I’m sitting on Santa’s face), you can see a Baby Surprise Jacket-in-progress poking out of my purse.
I’m in Chicago for a week, staying with friends in their Lincoln Park condo, which has an entire wall-o-windows and an amaaaaazing view of both downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan. I’m hoping to steal a few moments to photograph the finished Baby Surprise in all that gorgeous natural light.
And I started a new pair of Monkeys for my Sockapalooza pal, with the gorgeous One Sheep Hill yarn from Yarnzilla.
Sadly, they’re knitting up too small for her, so they’ll be frogged soon.
Happily, I’ve also cast on for Minty’s Zokni socks. How do folks feel about Knit Picks Gloss yarn? I’m using it for the Zoknis, since it’s been languishing in the stash for ages.
There will be more posts from Chicago, I’m sure. And when I get back home, look what’s waiting for me!

I’m so glad you got your camera back. If for nothing else, so I could see your Santa photos
The Monkey is looking great– it’s too bad it doesn’t fit! It’s a good thing that’s such a fast pattern.
I’m also glad to see you’ve got two socks in progress. You’ll do well

A belated Happy Birthday to you. I am so glad that someone was honest enough to hand in your camera. There are still honest people in the world. I hope you had a wonderful day, and have a great time at your friend’s house too.

That yarn looks so pretty in the Monkey pattern, too bad it’s too small. The Zokni pattern is really pretty. Glad your camera is back and you had a great birthday! Enjoy Chicago. My SIL used to live there and now she’s moved to the middle of Florida. What was she thinking!?

My thoughts on gloss — I love the way it knits up and it’s wonderful for stranded knitting, but it doesn’t wear that great. They make warm, decadent socks, but a pair I made for myself pilled like a mo-fo the first time I wore them. I also made Endpaper Mitts with them and my mom reports light pilling. I’d definitely use it again, but I’d be wary with socks.
That said, glad you found your camera!

Happy belated birthday (I’m so behind on my bloglines) & glad someone found your camera!
I hope you have a great time in chicago!
Ohhhh is that a quilt I see?

I’m so happy to hear that someone returned your camera–of course it would happen at a JoAnn! Go to Borders and that camera would be snatched up in a second.
And I’m totally touched and thrilled that you’re making a pair of Zoknis! Can’t wait to see ‘em.

Can’t wait to see Zokni when it’s farther along, you are such a crafty lass!

Is it the KnitPicks you’re using for the Monkeys? I would’ve guessed something fancier! Pretty yarn. Most of the KnitPicks I’ve dealt with pills and wears badly…
Boy, you definitely have friends in the right places!

“….just past where I’m sitting on Santa’s face”
I mean really, what can I add to that?
June 7th, 2007 at 3:07 am
Ack! Too bad about the frogging. That sure looks like the makings of a gorgeous sock.
June 7th, 2007 at 3:40 am
Oh, I’m so late on this one! Happy belated birthday!

Hope you had a wonderful birthday!!!
So glad that you got your camera back so we could see those hilarious santa shots! OH! And so you don’t have to buy yourself another one… ;0)

…sitting on Santa’s face. That’s a whole blog post right there. Nothing else needed! Too bad about the Monkeys…

Happy belated birthday, and I’m so glad you got your camera back.
Great fabric colors. A quilt?? I’m getting so tempted to try one.

Gorgeous socks. Huzzah on the camera front!
I hope you enjoy Chicago! I’ve lived here four years, and I finally went to Second City for a comedy show three days ago. It was actually well worth the visit.
BTW, my vote for best pizza in Chicago — Lou Malnati’s.

the santa pix are hilarious. I’ve never used knitpicks gloss…. i should check it out. do you use your machine to do the actual quilting or do you do it by hand?

That colourway is beautiful!
I found that the Monkey socks really show off the colour variations in variegated yarn. I made them in a merino cashmere yarn, see here!
Your sock pal is very lucky.

when are you here until? want to grab a coffee over the weekend? sunday afternoon?
June 7th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
those are great Santa pics. The socks are wonderful! Too bad you have to frog though…but it looks like the yarn/pattern choice is great!

SO GLAD you got your camera back!
ohhh…those monkeys ARE pretty. i just finished a pair and they did go fast. (even for me!)
must check out that sock yarn. i LOVE the graphics of the yarnzilla website and (in my experience) their customer service is really good.
hey…random question. how many yards of the main color did you use for the t-shirt smock? i have an ever growing shopping cart from reprodepot going and i want to make sure i am getting enough…thanks!

oh goodness - I love that colorway of sock yarn SO. MUCH!
June 7th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Hooray! I’m glad you got your camera back!

Plain spoken? We must be on the same wavelength! Have fun in Chi-town and say hi to Oprah for me.. hee hee… OH and don’t forget to keep your eye out for Common!

Happy belated birthday! It’s so cool that someone turned in your camera.
Can’t wait to see that quilt you are working on. I have recently become re-obsessed with sewing (and reading about sewing), hence my blog absence.
June 7th, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Those monkeys look really nice - too bad they’re not working for you!!! I hate frogging socks.
Amazing that your camera was turned in! I’m so impressed! Great news!
I ordered some Gloss for a secret pal but I haven’t used it myself. It’s not as soft as thought it would be. That’s the only meaningful observation I have for you!
June 8th, 2007 at 5:05 am
Yay for your camera returning! That yarn is freaking awesome, and you’re a lucky thing to live so close to yarnzilla!
Poor santa probably never saw you guys coming…

I started knitting a sock(s) with the Knit Picks Gloss. Unfortunately, it was put aside, and doesn’t seem to knit up on its own. Anyway, I enjoy knitting with the Gloss, but I highly suspect that it will pill. I can’t tell you definitively, but I just have a feeling about it. Maybe that’s why it/they got tossed aside?

Happy belated birthday, and I’m glad you found your camera!
June 9th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
Yay! Getting your camera back must have been a relief. Those Santa pictures would have been a major bummer to lose. Looks like a fun time!
