gift-filled homecoming eases pain of epic frog
I’m home! Until January! I pulled into my Flint, Michigan driveway at 2:00 this morning, and spent all day writing to deadline (and unpacking during breaks). I then took a long bath with some of the lovely stuff I got from Megan in a recent swap, and I’m just now sitting down with a mug of tea, the lover and the kitty, catching up on comments and Bloglines and Flickr.
AND, I finally got to open all the great packages that were waiting for me when I got home.
Sweet Feet sock yarn from Hill Country yarns in a yummy green called “Tadpole”;
sticky notes shaped like the letter P;
quilting pins; great-smelling room fragrance; a bag of dark chocolates;
and the summer issue of Rebecca.
I LOVE YOU, SECRET PAL!
FROG THIS SOCK.
The pattern is from wolhalla, and I love it. But I used Lorna’s Laces and One Sheep Hill (both lighter fingering weight) on 2.25mm needles, and it came out way too snug for my high instep. I can’t even get it on my foot. (When will I learn?) I’ll have to try again with some big fat Colinette Jitterbug on US 2s.

May 25th, 2007 at 8:11 am
Oh my, what fabulous socks!!
Can’t you STRETCH them somehow, someway?? Please try… I’ll simply perish if I see these lovelies frogged.
May 25th, 2007 at 10:29 am
Awesome swag!!
I’m more than a little jealous of your superfluous LL yarn…I received something considerably less swanky, but still fun.
Wait, you’re not going to be in Mpls. this summer? Grr…..
May 25th, 2007 at 11:17 am
ugh that sucks. do you have to frog the whole thing? or maybe just to the heel flap?
May 25th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
What a great way to come home! Those socks are wild - bummer you have to rip:(
May 25th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
oh well. they’re fun to look at.
May 25th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
that’s too bad - live and learn in the sock world though, right?
sounds like you are glad to be home and enjoying all the new gifties! that bright colored bag is great!
May 25th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Oh the sadness! I hate ripping and I would really hate to rip all of that work on the sock; but, of course you totally want it to fit…I am looking forward to seein git re-knit.

yay for all the awesome goodies to soothe your sorrow about that awesome sock. frogging it must have been brutal! it looked gorgeous! hope you do try again.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
Alas! But I’m sure those goodies did help ease the pain.
May 25th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Is it possible to just rip back to the heel and do a longer heel flap? That’s what I’ve been doing a lot– it seems like a lot of heel flaps are a little short on me.
All of those packages must have been fun to come home to! Have fun with them

Welcome back!
May 25th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
yay for swaps
that sock is insane!!!!!!! what an awesome pattern! sux that he’s jumping in the pond.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
dang I think that is the coolest sock I have ever seen! that is some serious tragic beauty. It actually makes me kinda want to knit some socks.
May 25th, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Those are some fantastic swaps–I think I might have to start joining things again!
Wow, that sock is so interesting and cool! It’s not often that you come across a sock pattern that is truly different, ya know? Too bad you have to rip it!
May 25th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
A brilliant sock like that one deserves to be frogged. It would be a disservice for it to go unworn, or even to be given to someone who might not appreciate the construction.
May 25th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
oh bummer about the socks. i had the same thing happen with some sideways socks i tried. never quite got round to starting again …
May 25th, 2007 at 9:03 pm
Bummer on having to rip the socks. But you did get some really great stuff! Great greens in the tadpole yarn. Enjoy the weekend!
May 25th, 2007 at 9:53 pm
Yup, that sucks! Your secret pal is awesome! I love the bag she sent!
May 25th, 2007 at 10:58 pm
haloscan HATES me. I’ve been trying to comment since this morning. Now I have no idea what I was going to say.
Oh! That sucks about the socks. They’re totally wacky and different, thoug, so I hope you get to make them work.
May 26th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
All those goodies! You’re so lucky. Love the green yarn.
And now you have to make those socks work because I am very intrigued by them.
May 26th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
Your swap packages are really great!! I love mail days like that.
I’m sorry you have to frog that sock. It’s a shame!! It’s a cool pattern but it is better to get a perfect fit than keep something you don’t love just “because”.
I *heart* big fat sock yarn!! I think you’ll find the knittery yarn falls under this category!
May 26th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
what an awesom package!!!
hey, what can i say, some people *never* learn. hehe, i am usually one of them! ;0)
May 27th, 2007 at 4:57 pm
You are a brave woman. I have been fighting my way through a Jaywalker that is too snug to get on and off easily; not enough cojones to ripout all that hard work. Good luck with the next version!
May 28th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Glad Secret Pal is going well for you! Looks like the package was right on!
May 28th, 2007 at 7:51 pm
You sure did get some rocking swap packages! That sock looks like such a great pattern for stripey yarn, I too want to see you finish one!
I totally went through a too-snug sock phase, which broke me down so much that I now do swatch before starting new socks. I mean really, who takes the time to do a gauge swatch for socks?
May 29th, 2007 at 2:10 am
wow, that is some awesome swap booty, enjoy! That is a great sock, sorry about the frogging - eek!
May 29th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
oh…bummer about that sock. I have been thinking about casting on ever since you gave me the link. I hope #2 works out!!
And i was awol when you posted about that t-shirt smock, and I just have to say i LOVE it. I have made the dress twice, but now HAVE to make a few smocks, too. The contrast fabric is a fabulous touch.
May 30th, 2007 at 1:08 am
Hope you’re enjoying being back home. Your sock is amazing - I’ve never seen anything like it.
May 30th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
One of life’s great joys is opening packages that come in the post, no? Never fails to excite me, even when I know what’s in it. I love the hot pink yarn!
Can’t you use the sock as a miniature stocking? It will be most painful to frog!

I’m so curious about these mitered socks. Do it again! I want to see what happens without knitting them myself
